What Birlasoft Holders Got Wrong Before The Slide

Birlasoft made headlines recently when it was named an OpenAI Select Partner, a badge that puts its AI ambitions front and center and supports a straightforward narrative about a company connected to the next wave of enterprise software. For Birlasoft shareholders, the loss from the start of the year was 24.1%, including dividends. If you had been weighing a fresh position back on 1 January 2026, how should this AI partnership and the business behind it really have shaped expectations?

The Argument Birlasoft Investors Were Really Having

The shares cost ₹432 at the start of the period, so anyone eyeing Birlasoft had to decide which story about its future felt more convincing.

The bullish camp saw the AI and cloud push as a springboard, with a Fair Value of ₹538, the price that Narrative's assumptions implied could be justified. That view leaned on Birlasoft closing multiyear AI powered enterprise deals and shifting more work into high recurrence contracts.

The more cautious side anchored on a Fair Value of ₹403 and treated tax and client risks as central. This Narrative highlighted high revenue concentration in the top 40 customers and the risk that a jump in the effective tax rate to around 36% could unsettle earnings.

What The Results Changed For The Birlasoft Debate

The OpenAI Select Partner announcement gave the bullish Birlasoft story fresh backing because it directly tied the business to enterprise AI projects that supporters were already counting on. At the same time, the Q2 2027 report showed revenue at ₹14,586.77m and net income at ₹1,596.46m, with net margin at 10.9% versus 8.7% a year earlier. This combination leaned toward the optimistic case on profitability.

The real lesson is about testable claims. When a thesis hinges on AI driven wins and better quality earnings, you track large AI partnerships, total revenue, and net margin together, then evaluate whether they are moving in the direction implied by that story.

What Birlasoft's Drop Is Really Asking You To Believe

Birlasoft now trades at ₹323 from the start of the year, after a loss of 24.1%. The selected Narrative places its Fair Value above that level, based on an AI first delivery pitch rather than simple hope in more deal wins.

For the fall to look like an opportunity rather than a warning, a buyer today would need to believe AI led delivery, outcome based contracts and a bigger sales force can convert higher TCV into broader, more resilient revenue.

"The current narrative that Birlasoft is undervalued implies that the share price does not fully reflect its cash-rich balance sheet, 16.1% EBITDA margin in Q1 FY27 and what proponents see as the potential earnings from structurally different, AI-infused, outcome-based contracts."
