Champion Iron reported mixed quarterly results, with about 3.9 million tonnes produced, nearly 4.5 million tonnes sold, approximately C$400 million in revenue and C$23 million in adjusted EBITDA. The company had about C$267 million in cash and access to roughly C$800 million in cash and undrawn loans after amending covenants to provide additional flexibility.

Bloom Lake's DRPF flotation plant remains on trackto reach full commercial production by the end of fiscal 2027, following its first commercial shipment and successful production testing. Champion is receiving premiums for the high-grade product and is targeting customers in Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and Oman.

Rana Gruber rebounded strongly, with production up 40% and sales up 180% from the prior quarter, helping reduce all-in sustaining costs to about C$97 per tonne. Champion also highlighted lower freight costs, improving logistics and rising direct-reduction pellet premiums as support for its shift away from China toward high-grade markets.
Champion Iron (TSE:CIA) reported fiscal 2027 second-quarter production of about 3.9 million tonnes and sales of just under 4.5 million tonnes, with higher sales helping reduce inventories at its Bloom Lake operation and at Rana Gruber.
Chief Executive Officer David Cataford said quarterly revenue was approximately C$400 million and adjusted EBITDA was C$23 million. The company ended the quarter with about C$267 million in cash, while cash increased from roughly C$200 million to C$214 million on a quarter-over-quarter basis, according to the company's presentation remarks.

The company said it has access to around C$800 million of cash and undrawn loans. Chief Financial Officer Michael Marcotte said Champion amended financial covenants under its senior secured credit facility as a preventive measure to provide more flexibility during the current market environment.
"We are in compliance for a senior secured facility currently," Marcotte said. He said the amendment provides potential covenant relief through mid-calendar 2027 if needed, while preserving the company's access to liquidity.
Bloom Lake Production and DRPF Ramp-Up

Bloom Lake produced approximately 3.3 million tonnes during the quarter, despite major shutdowns at Plant 1, Plant 2 and the flotation plant. Cataford said mine operations remained healthy, citing a strip ratio of about 1.2 and head grade of roughly 30%.
Cash costs at Bloom Lake were approximately C$60 per tonne. Land transportation costs declined to around C$24 per tonne from about C$30 per tonne in the prior quarter, which Cataford attributed largely to fixed port costs being spread over a higher volume of tonnes sold.

The company also said all-in sustaining costs declined as seasonal work wound down and sales volumes increased. Cataford said sustaining costs are typically lower in the third and fourth fiscal quarters because of winter conditions, while the company has also started implementing mine and sustaining-cost reduction measures.
Champion completed the construction of its direct reduction pellet feed, or DRPF, flotation plant within its C$500 million budget and continues commissioning activities. The company completed its inaugural commercial shipment of DRPF during the quarter, with the vessel having arrived at the customer's facility.
Cataford said the flotation plant was producing material at planned iron content and contaminant specifications, and that major equipment had demonstrated the ability to operate at or above design levels. He said a major shutdown at the flotation plant affected quarterly volumes but characterized the ramp-up as progressing well.
Champion continues to expect the DRPF plant to reach full commercial production by the end of fiscal 2027. The company secured further test cargoes and commercial agreements for DRPF material for the third and fourth quarters.
-
Champion said it is receiving premiums on test cargoes above those for its standard 66% iron ore material.
-
The company identified Germany, North Africa, the Middle East and Oman as potential markets for its high-grade product.
-
Cataford said customers have responded positively to the company's ability to supply full cargoes meeting its stated quality specifications.
Rana Gruber Rebounds in Sales
At Rana Gruber, production increased about 40% from the preceding quarter and sales rose approximately 180%, following operational and sales headwinds in the prior period. The stronger sales performance helped lower Rana Gruber's all-in sustaining cost to about C$97 per tonne.
Cataford said fuel prices and the C3 freight index were the primary factors affecting Rana Gruber's results, while iron ore prices were also somewhat lower. He said the company sees further opportunities to reduce costs at Rana Gruber, where it is undertaking work similar to its cost-reduction efforts at Bloom Lake.
Freight Costs and Pricing Effects
Champion said its gross realized price was affected by timing related to provisional pricing rather than increased discounts. At Sept. 30, the company had approximately 3.4 million tonnes of product on the water. Cataford said those tonnes were booked at C$103 per tonne under the forward curve, below the average P65 iron ore price during the quarter.
The final price for those shipments will be settled when the material reaches customers' facilities, and the effect of the provisional pricing is expected to carry into the following quarter.
Freight costs were approximately C$40 per tonne during the quarter. Cataford said C3 freight rates have subsequently declined from recent peaks. He attributed the earlier rise partly to bauxite shipments from Guinea, weather-related congestion in Asian ports and additional seaborne coal demand after mine closures in China.
He said improved weather conditions and Chinese coal-mine reopenings could reduce pressure on the C3 index. Chairman Michael O'Keeffe added that C3 costs had fallen into the C$30-per-tonne range from roughly C$40 to C$50 per tonne two months earlier, and said contracts for 2027 shipments to China could potentially be priced in the C$20s.
Focus on High-Grade Markets
Cataford said the DR pellet premium rose from around US$40 per tonne to nearly US$60 per tonne over the past year, reinforcing Champion's strategy of targeting the direct-reduction market. The company has invested more than C$6.7 billion at Bloom Lake, he said, and its multiyear capital spending cycle is now largely complete as it finishes the flotation plant ramp-up.
O'Keeffe said Champion seeks to reduce its exposure to sales into China and instead expand deliveries to Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, where it expects demand for high-grade material. He said the company has received interest that would make it "probably 130% sold" if it could immediately meet all potential customer requirements, while acknowledging that not all prospective demand will necessarily translate into sales contracts.
Champion also reported improved logistics performance. Cataford said September was a record month for vessel loading at the port and that rail, port and set-down-area operations have improved. He added that government support for Canadian high-grade iron ore and port initiatives could support future logistics capacity.
