Investing.com-- Citi opened a 30-day "catalyst watch" with a downside bias on Mexican budget carrier Volaris, saying it expects the stock to react negatively to third-quarter earnings.

In a note dated Oct. 8, Citi analysts said the airline faces a challenging environment in keeping capacity disciplined. Domestic demand is weakening, and a shift toward international routes brings risks around pricing elasticity, competition and costs. The watch expires on Nov. 7, while Volaris is set to report its quarterly earnings on October 26.

Citi said Volaris' ongoing fleet plan could add to cost pressures and squeeze margins, especially alongside higher fuel prices. It also flagged the risk of the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration cutting Mexico's air safety rating to Category 2.

The brokerage kept its "neutral/high risk" rating and a $6.60 target price on Volaris' U.S.-listed shares, which implies 5.1% upside from the $6.28 close on Oct. 8. Citi said a catalyst watch is separate from its longer-term fundamental rating.

Citi forecasts a 2026 net loss of $266 million, or $2.31 per share, compared with a $104 million loss in 2025. It expects adjusted EBITDA to fall to $624 million from $792 million, and a third-quarter net loss of $56 million.

Volaris said on Oct. 6 that third-quarter capacity rose 11.1%, with domestic capacity up 11.0% and international up 11.2%. In July, the company reinstated full-year EBITDAR margin guidance of about 23%, after responding to sharply higher fuel costs with capacity cuts and fare increases.

The company, along with its airline peers, are facing increasing headwinds from rising oil prices and sluggish budget airline demand.
