Clorox( NYSE:CLX ) reports fiscal first-quarter 2027 results on November 2. Shares trade at $87.52, and the $5 annualized dividend works out to a yield of about 5.7%. These results will show whether cash flow can cover that payout in a year of heavy cost inflation.
Purell Is Carrying a Struggling Core
Last quarter, adjusted EPS of $1.66 came in just ahead of the $1.65 consensus. Revenue of $1.948B also beat estimates, even though it fell 2.0% year over year. Gross margin contracted 520 bps to 41.3% because of lower volume, a GOJO inventory step-up and higher commodity and logistics costs.
The segment results split sharply. Health and Wellness, which now includes Purell, grew 16%, while Household fell 18% and Lifestyle dropped 17%. Management guided fiscal 2027 adjusted EPS to $5.70 to $6.00. The board has since continued a CEO search, and shares are down 21.7% over the past year.

Ninety days ago, the quarterly EPS consensus was at $1.2135. Over the past 30 days, analysts made five downward revisions and just one upward revision.
Margins and Cash Flow Will Decide the Dividend Debate
Gross margin is my first stop. Management expects fiscal 2027 inflation above $200 million, which it called "more than double our historical range," and expects that pressure to hit hardest in the first half. The outlook also assumes Brent crude at about $90 per barrel. Any shortfall against the roughly 42% full-year margin target would weaken the case for a second-half recovery.
Cash flow comes next. CFO Luc Bellet said on the August call, "Our commitment to support the dividend has not changed." He also called the payout "a bit elevated" but described it as temporary. The $5 annualized dividend equals about 88% of fiscal 2027 consensus EPS, the kind of thin coverage we highlighted among the warning signs in our free dividend trap guide. Interest expense is expected to reach about $210 million after the Purell deal drove net debt to $4.9 billion.
It's also worth checking how Purell is performing. GOJO added to earnings in the fourth quarter ("accretive, not dilutive"), and Clorox launched Clorox Purell ProCare in September. Management has also warned that the first quarter could look soft, calling it "a blip given some timing issues" around Kingsford. Watch whether Household and Lifestyle stop declining and whether litter, which management called a work in progress, starts to improve.
A Decade of Dividend Increases Faces Its Toughest Test
Clorox has raised its dividend annually for a decade, most recently to $1.25 per quarter. Management needs to show that free cash flow is tracking toward its 11% to 13% target and that gross margin is holding near plan. If both hold up, the high yield looks well supported. If margins slip and the company cuts guidance, the payout ratio becomes the most important number in the report.
