Shares of Bloom Energy (BE) fell 11.2% on October 23, 2026, the trading session after the company reported its fiscal Q3 2026 results, while the S&P 500 slipped 0.5%. Management raised its full-year outlook for revenue, operating income and EPS. The business also consumed cash in the quarter rather than bringing it in. Market reports on October 23 tied the share fall to concerns about that cash use. So how far did Bloom Energy's cash fall behind its sales?

Bloom Energy's Operations Used Cash As Sales Climbed

Operations at Bloom Energy used $27 million of cash in fiscal Q3 2026, after bringing in $226 million in fiscal Q2. Sales moved in the opposite direction, producing $1.24 billion in revenue. That figure was up from $1.07 billion in fiscal Q2 and climbed 138.1% from a year earlier. The company also earned a net profit of $250 million, keeping the shortfall isolated to cash rather than profit.

Industry peers experienced far smaller moves in the session after the report. FuelCell Energy fell 4.1%, while Plug Power ended flat and Cummins barely moved. The initial drop did not hold. By October 28, Bloom Energy shares were 4.7% above their close on the report day , against a 1.1% gain for the S&P 500.

Is Bloom Energy's Cash Use A One-Quarter Event?

The cash consumption is so far a single-quarter event. Operations brought cash in during each of the four preceding quarters. Over the last twelve months, operating activities brought in $691 million, against $180 million in the twelve months before. Profit did not slip alongside cash. The operating margin reached 18.2% in fiscal Q3 2026, up from 17.1% in fiscal Q2.

During the October 22 call, management said a rise in working capital more than offset net income, citing mainly inventory, contract assets and receivables. Because billing follows contract milestones, management added, cash can arrive a quarter after the sale is recorded. Management also said the quarter was not the start of a trend, pointing out that operations had generated cash for the year to date.

Bloom Energy Plans To Fund Its Expansion From Operations

Management raised its fiscal 2026 revenue outlook to $4.5 billion at the midpoint, up from $4.05 billion in July, and Bloom Energy is adding capacity to support that growth. Capital spending reached $153 million in fiscal Q3 2026, directed mostly toward machinery and production capacity at the Fremont and Newark facilities. Management said the company funds that investment from operations, but in fiscal Q3 alone it did not. Free cash flow, calculated as cash from operations less capital spending, was a use of $181 million.

Management also kept its fiscal 2026 non-GAAP gross margin outlook at about 34%, unchanged from July despite the higher revenue outlook. It said the company faces some near-term cost from ramping new production lines and expediting deliveries.

When Bloom Energy reports its next results, expected in February 2027, cash from operations for fiscal Q4 2026 is the number to watch.
