Investors put $7.27 billion of net new money into the Direxion Daily Semiconductor Bull 3X ETF( NYSEARCA:SOXL ) in October, about 29.91% of its $24.31 billion in assets. The fund ended up falling 47.89% over the month.

The ProShares UltraPro QQQ( NASDAQ:TQQQ ) drew $3.49 billion, about 9.49% of its $36.79 billion, while falling 20.53%.

The downturn continued on November 2, 2026, when SOXL fell 11.52% to $68.17, and TQQQ dropped 4.11% to $59.46. After hours, SOXL quoted $69.70 and TQQQ $59.83, too small a gain to offset the day's losses.

Money arriving while prices fall suggests dip buying, which means adding to a position on weakness in expectation of a rebound. In funds that reset their leverage every day, that approach gets more expensive the longer the recovery takes (we wrote a free guide on betting with just a small slice of a portfolio, with the sizing and exit rules that keep it from hurting, here).

What October's Flows Actually Show

Net flows record money entering a fund but not who bought, at what price, or whether they still hold, so the total loss is unknown. Hana Securities counted $7.15 billion into SOXL in the week of October 12 to 16, second among U.S.-listed equity ETFs, as its price fell about 33%, and $810 million into TQQQ during a drop of about 16%.

A later report added $3.13 billion into SOXL, including $1.60 billion on October 23. Korean retail investors net bought $2.97 billion of SOXL in October, 54.7% of their net U.S. buying.

The latest week split between the two funds, with TQQQ leading all funds with $904 million in five-day inflows, while SOXL posted the largest redemption at $931 million and Direxion's triple-inverse chip fund took in $518 million.

How the Daily Reset Shaped the Losses

Direxion says these funds "seek daily investment results" of triple the index. ProShares warns that "for any holding period other than a day, your return may be higher or lower than the Daily Target."

The October damage stemmed mainly from the size of the fall. From October 6 to November 2, SOXL lost 58.50%, compared with 23.04% for the unleveraged iShares Semiconductor ETF( NASDAQ:SOXX ). That is less than triple, because daily resets reduce exposure as a fund falls.

Decay, the erosion from compounding daily moves, shows up when prices go back and forth. Over the 11-session stretch from October 14 to October 29, SOXX slid 1.07% while SOXL lost 7.37%.

For example, a SOXL buyer at the October 16 close of $93.67 would be down about 27%. Other buyers' losses depend on entry timing.

Why a Rebound Repairs Leveraged Funds More Slowly

Over the two sessions ending November 2, SOXX fell 11.72%, and SOXL fell 33.42%. SOXX needs about 13.3% to recover its October 29 close, while SOXL needs about 50.2%.

The Invesco QQQ Trust( NASDAQ:QQQ ) needs about 5.0%, against 16.5% for TQQQ.

Early-year holders remain in profit, as SOXL is up 62.29% year to date even after falling 77.3% from its June 22 close, and TQQQ is up 13.45%. Year-to-date flows of minus $4.07 billion for SOXL and minus $950 million for TQQQ show those holders taking money out.

What to Watch Before Leveraged Tech ETFs Can Recover

For investors at or near retirement, the daily reset amplifies these risks. Recovery depends on a fast, steady rebound, and the next tests are the October jobs report on November 6 and NVIDIA( NASDAQ:NVDA ) earnings on November 17.

SOXX and QQQ hold the same companies without the daily reset. A rebound repairs them faster, and a further slide costs them less than it costs the leveraged versions.

One level is worth checking: if SOXX recovers its October 29 close by November 17 while SOXL stays below its own, the reset math will have worked against October's buyers exactly as described here.
