Dow (DOW) Stock Climbs After Q3 Earnings Sharpen Margin Recovery

Trade Dow on Coinbase

The market liked what it saw. Dow stock closed at $32.61 on Friday, up 2.5% on the day, as traders rushed to price in fresh Q3 2026 numbers.

The headline is simple. A volatile chemicals cycle met a cleaner earnings story. Net sales reached $11.27b and net income came in at $458m, with operating profitability helped by more disciplined pricing and self help savings. That moderate price pop now reflects a tug of war. Short term enthusiasm is reacting to a tidier quarter. The deeper question is whether this emerging margin repair really justifies a re-rating.

Dow self help thesis meets early proof points

Believers in the Dow transformation story focus on whether internal levers can steadily lift earning power through a choppy cycle.

"The main factor that needs to go right is that Dow delivers the planned self-help benefits and achieves a mix shift into higher value silicones, data center solutions and other resilient end markets while keeping its balance sheet strong."

Q3 speaks directly to that claim. About US$250m of transformation benefits in the quarter and roughly US$450m year to date show real traction versus the US$700m full-year target. Downstream silicones growth, AI linked Industrial Solutions demand and US$300m of debt repurchases reinforce that mix shift and balance sheet discipline are starting to materialise.

Polyethylene and China risk still shadow Dow story

On the downside, the concern is that heavy commodity exposure and China oversupply still mute recovery, whatever the self help progress.

"There is a risk of prolonged macroeconomic weakness and below-average GDP growth, which is reflected in softer global polyethylene demand and lower pricing that have already led to a downgrade of Q3 2026 EBITDA expectations and could further weigh on revenue and profitability."

Operating EBITDA landed above US$1.5b, so Q3 cleared the reduced bar. Yet management kept Q4 EBITDA guidance around the same level and flagged higher European energy costs and logistics frictions. The need to cut guidance earlier, plus only modest integrated polyethylene margin uplift assumed for Q4, suggests the polyethylene and China drag has not meaningfully eased.

Hunt For Mispriced Earnings Power

Dow just showed how a cleaner earnings story can still be vulnerable to cycle worries. The real opportunity is finding stocks that could be undervalued before the market corrects them.

  • Company 1 - 42% below our estimate - builds on a solar tracker and software platform as newer storage and inverter offerings scale into delayed projects.

  • Company 2 - 49% below our estimate - converts a near record backlog of large construction projects into cash while containing costly legacy dispute liabilities.

  • Company 3 - 28% below our estimate - supplies liquid cooling and power infrastructure as AI data centre power density overwhelms air based systems.

Those are three of them. See the full list of 27 companies trading below our fair value estimates →
