Drone stocks are rallying unevenly, with the smallest and most volatile names capturing the bulk of the gains while the sector's larger player lags behind. Red Cat Holdings( NASDAQ:RCAT ) stock is at $4.84, up 10% in afternoon trading, putting the small-cap drone maker at the front of the group. Even after that surge, Red Cat stock is down 39% year to date (YTD), so the rebound is starting from a deeply bruised base.
Meanwhile, Ondas Inc.( NASDAQ:ONDS ) stock is at $6.66, up 8%, keeping pace just behind Red Cat stock as the second-strongest name in the group. AeroVironment( NASDAQ:AVAV ) stock is at $128.03, up 2%, a much milder gain that leaves the sector's larger, established name trailing both small caps by a wide margin. Taken together, the moves show money flowing heaviest into the riskiest corner of the drone trade.
A thematic fund supports the tilt at the sector level, where unmanned systems and modern warfare names are moving together. The Defiance Drone and Modern Warfare ETF( NYSEARCA:JEDI ) is up 5%, and Ondas and Red Cat ranked among its larger disclosed holdings as of June 30. For comparison, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust( NYSEARCA:SPY ) is up 0.6%, a fraction of the drone basket's advance.

Risk Appetite Reaches High-Beta Drone Names Hardest
Price action across the drone group fits broad risk appetite reaching high-beta small caps heaviest than larger names. Both Red Cat and Ondas shares are far outpacing AeroVironment stock, and the thematic fund's rise shows the buying extends across the unmanned systems and counter-drone corner of defense tech. That concentration cuts both ways, since the volatility amplifying gains in Red Cat and Ondas shares can work just as heaviest in reverse.
Red Cat also launched Red Cat Aerial earlier this month. The single brand combines its Teal Drones and FlightWave Aerospace teams, and Red Cat revealed TRICHON, a hand-launched, long-endurance tricopter built for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) missions. Ondas, for its part, formed Regna AI, a separate private company it started to deliver mission-specialized AI models inside customers' own environments.
Red Cat and Ondas Sell Very Different Drone Businesses
Ondas runs a broader model, selling integrated autonomous platforms across air, ground and stratospheric environments to defense, homeland security and critical infrastructure customers, and that reach gives it more paths to contracts while Regna AI adds a software layer to its hardware lineup. However, Ondas stock is down 32% YTD, a reminder that the market hasn't yet rewarded the company's acquisition-driven expansion.
AeroVironment is the larger, established maker of military drones and loitering munitions, and that scale tends to dampen swings in the stock. On a YTD basis, AeroVironment stock is down 47%, a steeper drawdown than either Red Cat stock or Ondas stock has suffered. Its slower bounce leaves the defense name with the most ground to recover of the three, even though it carries the richest product portfolio.
Red Cat's Path From TRICHON Debut to Confirmed Orders
The bull case for Red Cat rests on TRICHON and the broader Red Cat Aerial lineup turning into supports orders from military customers, though without a contract a product debut leaves Red Cat stock exposed if orders arrive slowly, and that's the core of the bear case. Red Cat's next test is whether TRICHON draws its first confirmed orders.
High-beta rallies this concentrated can reverse quickly, particularly for drone stocks still trading well below where they began the year after a difficult stretch. Speculating in names like these works best when it's fenced off with real sizing rules (our full playbook on that is available at Small Stakes, Big Swings). Investors should consider keeping their position sizes modest until Red Cat's TRICHON order picture resolves.
