Earnings Cover the New Payout Comfortably

Entergy confirmed 2026 adjusted EPS guidance of $4.25 to $4.45. The new annualized dividend works out to 61% to 64% of that range. That is a moderate payout ratio for a regulated utility that also has to keep cash for construction. In 2025, adjusted EPS was $3.91, which landed in the top half of guidance.

Industrial customers are doing most of the work. Industrial sales volume rose 14.9% in the first quarter and 10% in the second. On the July call, management described the pipeline ahead:

"Looking beyond our current outlooks, we continue to have 7 to 12 gigawatts of hyperscale potential in our pipeline as well as 3 to 5 gigawatts of interest from traditional industrial segments."

Data Centers Pay Their Own Freight

The main contract is a 20-year electric service agreement with a Meta Platforms( NASDAQ:META ) subsidiary in Louisiana. Chief Executive Drew Marsh said these deals are designed to protect existing ratepayers:

"These customers are paying their entire incremental costs during the life of the contract and a tariff rate which includes fixed cost and other components in the minimum bill."

For the agreements signed so far, Entergy expects $7 billion in customer bill benefits. Those benefits help keep the regulators who approve Entergy's revenue on its side.

Capex Outruns Cash Flow, So Financing Matters

In 2025, Entergy generated $5.15 billion of operating cash flow and spent $7.68 billion on capital projects. Debt and equity fill the difference. In early May, the company completed a $2.175 billion equity forward offering, and about 60% of its five-year equity plan is now contracted. Management said:

"Our plan reflects FFO to debt at or above 15% throughout the outlook period for Moody's metric, giving us capacity to manage events in the business as they occur."

First-quarter operating cash flow rose 54.6% to $829 million.

How Entergy Stacks Up Against Southern and NextEra

Southern Company( NYSE:SO ) cited a 78-year dividend run and a $0.74 quarterly payment. However, its second-quarter commercial sales grew 7.3%, slower than Entergy's industrial growth. NextEra Energy( NYSE:NEE ) expects dividend growth to slow from about 10% a year through 2026 to 6% a year from year-end 2026 through 2028. That puts Entergy's raise right in line with the sector's benchmark grower.

Entergy's own record is steady. Split-adjusted quarterly payments went from $0.60 in 2025 to $0.64 starting in November 2025, and StreetInsider reports $0.68 now. Its dividend records date back to 1999.

Financing Costs Could Test the Raise

The biggest risk is financing costs. Entergy lists higher interest expense, rising debt balances, and dilution from settling equity forwards among its earnings challenges. In June, it settled 8.7 million shares. If hyperscale load comes late, those costs show up before the revenue does.

The raise looks sustainable. Entergy pays out less than two-thirds of guided earnings, its credit metrics sit above agency thresholds, and contracts that make data centers pay their own costs back its growth. Readers can test that view against third-quarter results on Nov. 2.
