Expro (XPRO) Stock Trades Up, Here Is Why

What Happened?

Shares of oilfield services provider Expro (NYSE:XPRO) jumped 2.9% in the morning session after the company posted mixed results for the second quarter that included a revenue beat but a miss on profit. The company reported revenue of $393.2 million, which was down 7% from the prior year but surpassed Wall Street's estimates.

However, Expro's profitability fell short of expectations, with adjusted earnings of $0.15 per share missing the consensus forecast of $0.18. Adjusted EBITDA also came in below estimates, and key profit margins contracted compared to the same quarter last year. Investors appeared to be focusing on the top-line beat, which offset the disappointing bottom-line performance and the year-over-year sales decline.

After the initial pop, the shares cooled down to $16.12, up 2.8% from the previous close.

What Is The Market Telling Us

Expro's shares are very volatile and have had 27 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today's move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The previous big move we wrote about was 21 days ago when the stock gained 2.9% on the news that oil prices surged following attacks on commercial ships near the Strait of Hormuz. Multiple tankers were reportedly struck by projectiles in the critical shipping lane, a key passageway for global oil transport. The incident immediately pushed crude oil prices higher, with the August contract rising to over $72 a barrel. This development adds a layer of uncertainty for investors, as sustained higher oil prices can fuel inflation.Simultaneously, a drone attack on Russia's largest refinery signaled a significant expansion in the Ukraine conflict, further pressuring prices upward.Higher oil prices typically translate to increased revenues and profitability for oil and gas companies, boosting investor sentiment across the sector.

Expro is up 18.1% since the beginning of the year, but at $16.12 per share, it is still trading 12.4% below its 52-week high of $18.39 from March 2026. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Expro's shares at the IPO in October 2021 would now be looking at an investment worth $773.64.
