GoPro Inc. ( GPRO , Financials ), the action-camera maker, surged after YouTube creator Mark Fischbach , better known as Markiplier, emerged as its largest individual shareholder.
GoPro shares rose 46.01% during Monday's regular session and then gained another 55% after hours, taking the combined move above 128%.
The catalyst was the disclosure that Fischbach had accumulated an 8.5% stake in the company. The rally stands in sharp contrast with GoPro's underlying financial performance.
Second-quarter revenue fell 31.3% year over year to about $105 million, while the company reported a net loss of $51 million. Camera sales declined 38%.
GoPro has also reduced its workforce by 23% this year, while management has expressed substantial doubt about the company's ability to continue operating.
That makes the Markiplier stake especially important for investors.
The disclosure has injected fresh interest into a stock that had been struggling with falling sales and weak sentiment, but it does not by itself fix the company's operating challenges.
Analysts remain cautious, with the average price target cited by the report at $0.50, below the stock's recent trading level.
The next question is whether Fischbach's investment remains a passive stake or becomes the beginning of a more active role in GoPro's future.
