HSBC (LSE:HSBA) Stock Price Trails Q3 Earnings Strength As Hong Kong Risk Lingers

Explore stocks on Coinbase

Investors came into HSBC Holdings' Q3 2026 earnings already on the back foot, with the stock down about 17% over the past three months and around 15% over the past month. The mood looked tired. The results were anything but. Management reported Q3 net income of US$7.6b and basic earnings per share of about US$0.44, supported by a healthy trailing 12‑month return on earnings power, yet the share price closed at £12.91 on the day of the release. Sentiment is clearly wrestling with strong profitability against lingering worries about credit quality and valuation.

HSBC's AI And Wealth Ambitions Face A Reality Check

HSBC's bullish story hangs on technology and wealth scale turning into sustained earnings power rather than a short burst of good quarters.

"The build out of a large structural hedge of US$585b that is rolling onto higher yields, together with a strong deposit franchise of US$1.7t and ongoing guidance for banking NII of US$43b or better, highlights potential for resilient interest income."

Q3 banking NII of about US$11.7b and unchanged full year guidance of at least US$46b show this income engine is tracking the plan. Deposit balances increased by roughly US$105b year on year and management still targets 17%+ RoTE. This supports the idea that the hedge and funding mix are doing the heavy lifting investors were told to expect.

HSBC NII Fears And Hong Kong Risk Under The Microscope

The harsher view argues HSBC's Hong Kong tilt and rate reliance could backfire if credit and deposit trends break the wrong way.

"The planned privatization of Hang Seng Bank concentrates earnings and capital in Hong Kong at a time when commercial real estate credit quality remains under pressure. A weaker Hong Kong office market for longer could limit profit growth and RoTE expansion from this deal and weigh on earnings volatility."

Q3 paints a mixed picture. Banking NII of about US$11.7b and reiterated guidance of at least US$46b show the rate engine still working, yet management openly flags Hong Kong time deposit margin pressure and keeps cost of risk guidance around 45 bps despite a lighter Q3 charge. That caution suggests the Hong Kong credit and earnings concentration worry is not disproved by this quarter.

Hunt Mispriced Earnings Power

HSBC Holdings reports strong profit numbers that still meet cautious market sentiment. The real opportunity sits in stocks that could be undervalued before valuations catch up.

  • Company 1 - 30% below our estimate - targets extended defence programmes expanding sonar and underwater protection tied to autonomous and uncrewed platforms.

  • Company 2 - 23% below our estimate - works through a record backlog while ramping munitions, vehicles, electronics and space capacity with digitalised production.

  • Company 3 - 34% below our estimate - tightens cost to serve as its membership model and recommerce operations deepen loyalty in domestic appliances and tech.
