Mission Produce, Inc.AVO currently trades at a forward 12-month price-to-earnings (P/E) multiple of 13.42X, below the Zacks Agricultural - Operations industry average of 15.68X. The company sources, produces and distributes avocados through a global network, with its recently completed Calavo acquisition expanding its customer reach and prepared foods capabilities. The key question is whether the discount offers an attractive entry point or reflects continuing earnings and integration risks.

The valuation looks less attractive when compared with individual peers. The company's peers include Archer Daniels Midland CompanyADM, Dole PlcDOLE and AdecoagroAGRO, which trade at varying forward earnings multiples. ADM trades at a forward 12-month P/E of 13.71X, slightly above AVO's 13.42X. However, DOLE and AGRO trade at lower multiples of 9.41X and 8.30X, respectively.

Mission Produce shares have declined 8% over the past three months, outperforming the Agricultural - Operations industry's 23.8% drop. However, AVO has lagged the Consumer Staples sector's 0.5% rise and the S&P 500's 2.6% gain.

The stock trades below its 50- and 200-day simple moving averages of $12.51 and $12.89, respectively, indicating weak technical momentum. Its relative resilience against the industry has therefore not translated into a broader recovery in the share price.

What's Behind AVO's Dismal Stock Run?

Mission Produce's weak stock performance comes against a backdrop of lower avocado selling prices and pressure on profitability despite strong volume growth. In the third quarter of fiscal 2026, per-unit selling prices declined 9% year over year, limiting the earnings benefit from higher volumes. Gross margin contracted 270 basis points to 9.9%, while adjusted EBITDA edged down to $32.4 million from $32.6 million. Higher volumes and Calavo's contribution therefore did not translate into year-over-year growth in consolidated adjusted EBITDA during the quarter.

Weakness in International Farming further weighed on earnings. Segment adjusted EBITDA declined to $7.6 million from $12.1 million as higher global avocado supply pressured selling prices. Consolidated adjusted EPS fell to 18 cents from 26 cents, reflecting the challenge of translating operational expansion into stronger per-share earnings. In its September 2026 outlook, management also expected fourth-quarter industry avocado prices to decline approximately 10% year over year, suggesting continued pressure on farming returns.

The Calavo acquisition has added integration costs and increased the financing burden. Mission Produce reported a third-quarter net loss attributable to the company of $6.5 million, including $25.4 million in acquisition-related pre-tax costs. Outstanding credit-facility borrowings increased to $402.1 million as of July 31, 2026, from $96 million as of Oct. 31, 2025, while quarterly interest expense more than doubled to $5.1 million from $2.4 million. Higher financing obligations increase the importance of realizing acquisition savings and improving profitability.

Cash generation adds another concern. Operating activities used $25.9 million during the first nine months of fiscal 2026 compared with $21.4 million generated a year earlier, reflecting lower income, acquisition-related spending and higher working capital requirements. Capital expenditures required another $32 million, adding to funding demands. Although management expected a seasonal cash-flow improvement, converting harvest sales into cash remains essential to supporting investment and reducing debt.

AVO Earnings Estimates Signal a Fiscal 2027 Recovery

The Zacks Consensus Estimate for Mission Produce's fiscal 2026 EPS was unchanged over the past 30 days, while the fiscal 2027 estimate increased by 3 cents. Consensus estimates imply fiscal 2026 sales growth of 3.6% and an earnings decline of 17.7%. For fiscal 2027, sales and earnings are expected to increase 14.1% and 33.9%, respectively.

AVO's Growth Drivers to Overcome Challenges

Expanding avocado consumption provides a foundation for Mission Produce's long-term growth. On its September earnings call, management reported that U.S. consumption was trending above 10 pounds per capita year to date, about 12% higher than a year earlier, while household penetration increased approximately 50 basis points. U.S. retail avocado volumes also grew approximately 9% year over year in the third quarter. Greater household adoption and consumption across multiple meals create opportunities for Mission Produce to benefit from more frequent purchases and broader product availability.

Mission Produce is strengthening its competitive position within this growing category. Its legacy business gained an estimated 60 basis points of U.S. retail market share year to date, reflecting deeper customer relationships and reliable support for retail programs. These gains demonstrate commercial progress independent of Calavo's acquired volumes. Calavo's complementary customer relationships and additional packing capacity further expand Mission Produce's ability to serve a broader customer base throughout the year, supporting opportunities for organic growth through larger customer programs.

Mission Produce's international reach and value-added capabilities provide additional avenues for expansion. The company serves customers in more than 25 countries and has sourcing capabilities across more than 20 growing regions. Additional distribution outlets in Southern Europe broaden its ability to allocate fruit according to customer demand and relative market returns. Meanwhile, Calavo's established guacamole and prepared foods capabilities complement Mission Produce's sourcing expertise and global customer network. Management indicated that collaboration between the sales organizations had already opened customer opportunities, supporting cross-selling and longer-term geographic expansion.

The Calavo acquisition also creates opportunities to improve earnings through cost savings and greater network utilization. Management increased its estimated annualized synergy opportunity from at least $25 million to more than $30 million after identifying additional SG&A savings and network efficiencies. Opportunities span distribution, freight, procurement and organizational expenses, with benefits expected to begin contributing in the fourth quarter and build more meaningfully through fiscal 2027. These remain anticipated benefits, with successful implementation needed to translate the expanded platform into stronger profitability.

Mission Produce outlined a five-year plan targeting mid-single-digit organic sales growth, approximately 300 basis points of margin expansion and high-single-digit organic adjusted EBITDA growth. The strategy centers on Calavo synergies, higher-margin Prepared Foods, greater asset utilization and international expansion. Management also aims to convert more than 90% of adjusted net income into free cash flow over time and reduce net leverage below 1.5 times adjusted EBITDA, while pursuing a longer-term ambition to double sales and triple adjusted EBITDA by 2035. These targets strengthen the long-term recovery case, although delivery will depend on successful integration, improved cash generation and disciplined execution.

How to Play AVO Stock?

Mission Produce's industry valuation discount offers recovery potential, supported by expanding avocado demand and market-share gains. Calavo's broader product portfolio and anticipated cost savings also provide a foundation for stronger long-term earnings. However, persistent pricing pressure, higher financing costs and integration demands could delay that recovery. Trading below key moving averages, the stock also lacks convincing technical momentum.
Therefore, investors may benefit from adopting a cautious approach and waiting for clearer evidence of sustainable earnings growth or more attractive entry points before initiating positions, while monitoring the Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) company's progress.
