Should Investors Buy TPL as Growth Meets a Premium Valuation?

Explore stocks on Coinbase

Texas Pacific Land CorporationTPL offers a rare mix of high-margin royalty economics, expanding water operations and new growth avenues. The trade-off is price. Investors are being asked to pay well above key valuation benchmarks for that growth profile.

That makes TPL less of a simple growth call and more of a question about entry point. Strong earnings trends support the bull case, but valuation and operating risks argue against chasing the stock.

TPL's Growth Profile Remains Strong

The Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2026 earnings is $8.88 per share, up from $6.97 in 2025. Sales are projected to grow 26.2% in 2026, reinforcing the near-term growth case.

The longer record also stands out. TPL's 10-year EPS growth rate is 14.1%, above the industry median of 13.2%, while its 10-year EPS Linearity score is 86.9% versus the industry median of 51%. That points to relatively consistent historical per-share compounding, though past durability does not eliminate future commodity or activity risk.

Texas Pacific Land Trades at a Rich Multiple

TPL trades at 34.76X forward 12-month earnings, compared with 21.33X for the Zacks sub-industry. The stock also sits above its own five-year median multiple of 29.17X.

That gap raises the execution bar. Earnings can keep growing while returns disappoint if the market decides the stock deserves a lower multiple, so the valuation leaves less room for weaker commodity prices, slower drilling or softer water demand.

TPL's Royalty and Water Engines Add Upside

TPL's royalty model remains a central advantage. The company earns oil and gas royalties without funding well development or bearing most operating costs, while acquisitions have expanded its royalty base. Second-quarter royalty production reached a record 39,700 barrels of oil equivalent per day.

The water business adds another earnings stream. Produced-water royalty volumes reached a record 4.9 million barrels per day in the second quarter. Viper Energy, Inc.VNOM offers a useful industry comparison because it also owns mineral and royalty interests primarily in the Permian Basin and benefits from operator-funded development, underscoring the appeal of capital-light exposure to basin activity.

Texas Pacific Land's Risks Argue for Patience

Cost growth is one reason to stay selective. Second-quarter operating expenses rose 23.9% year over year to $54.2 million, including higher water-service, staffing and general and administrative costs.

TPL also remains unhedged and dependent on commodity prices and third-party drilling decisions. Water demand can shift quickly, as second-quarter water sales volumes fell 19% sequentially. New initiatives may broaden the opportunity set, but returns remain uncertain. Chevron CorporationCVX is developing Project Kilby in West Texas, where TPL has agreed to provide land and brackish water resources, yet the financial contribution from TPL's broader data-center, power and water-reuse efforts is still developing.

TPL's Growth Score Outshines Its Value Score

The bottom line is that TPL's growth profile is attractive, but the current valuation limits the margin for error. For investors focused on risk-adjusted entry points, patience is reasonable while watching whether earnings growth can continue to justify the premium.

TPL currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Its Growth Score of B supports the growth case, but the Value Score of F shows that valuation is a clear weak spot. A Momentum Score of C and VGM Score of D add to the mixed setup, which fits a hold-oriented stance rather than an aggressive buy conclusion.
