Quick Read

  • JetBlue surged 11% after fare revenue per seat mile jumped 18%, recovering most of rising fuel costs and beating the airline's own expectations.

  • Delta and American Airlines gained roughly 1% each, exposing the rally as JetBlue-specific rather than a broad airline sector move.

  • Despite the revenue beat, JetBlue's creditors have hired restructuring advisers, leaving its balance sheet risks unresolved.

Higher fares are absorbing a heavy fuel bill at one New York-focused carrier, and its latest report delivered that evidence a day after its finances came under fresh scrutiny. JetBlue Airways( NASDAQ:JBLU ) stock is at $2.63, up 11% early in the session. Such a sharp reversal signals relief over the carrier's near-term position.

Meanwhile, Delta Air Lines( NYSE:DAL ) stock is at $79.88, up 0.9%, a modest gain that trails the surge in JetBlue stock by a wide margin. American Airlines Group( NASDAQ:AAL ) stock is at $12.35, up 1%, inching slightly past Delta stock while still running far behind JetBlue stock. Delta stock and American Airlines stock are moving in the same direction as JetBlue stock, though on a much smaller scale.

Sector funds point to a narrow rally driven by a single company. The U.S. Global Jets ETF( NYSEARCA:JETS ), which holds JetBlue, Delta and American Airlines among its positions, is up 0.9%. On the benchmark side, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust( NYSEARCA:SPY ) is up 0.3%, leaving airline stocks only slightly ahead of the overall market while JetBlue stock runs well past both.

Fare Strength Recaptures JetBlue's Fuel Shock

JetBlue reported quarterly results after the close in the prior session, with operating revenue per available seat mile up 18.4% from a year earlier as strong demand and higher fares carried sales ahead of the airline's initial expectations. Losses at JetBlue grew from a year earlier as fuel costs climbed, yet the airline recovered most of that increase through higher fares. Management also expects its operating margin to improve year over year in the fourth quarter.

Chief executive Joanna Geraghty stated, "Resilient demand and strong yields drove revenue well ahead of our initial expectations, allowing us to recapture more of the increase in fuel costs than we initially expected." Geraghty's message carries extra weight because the results land a day after JetBlue stock fell sharply when creditors hired restructuring advisers. The airline said it has the liquidity and financing options to bridge to its profitability targets, a statement aimed directly at the balance sheet worries behind the prior session's slide.

JetBlue Rebound Runs Far Ahead of Delta and American Airlines

Results that relieved the worries raised in the prior session set off a company-specific reaction at JetBlue, which explains why JetBlue stock is running so far ahead of Delta stock and American Airlines stock. As a smaller, New York-focused carrier still working toward sustained operating profitability next year, JetBlue feels fuel costs and balance sheet strength more heavily than its larger rivals do. That profile turns every quarterly update into a referendum on the airline's financial position.

The bull case for JetBlue rests on higher fares continuing to offset fuel costs as the airline works toward sustained operating profitability next year. JetBlue's fourth-quarter margin improvement would mark another step on that path, and the airline's strong yields so far suggest travelers are absorbing higher fares without pulling back.

Skeptics have a sturdy bear case for JetBlue: the airline is still losing money while fuel prices run higher, and its creditors have brought in restructuring advisers. A strong revenue quarter leaves those balance sheet questions unresolved, and any softening in fares could quickly bring them back to the forefront.

JetBlue's Profitability Path Runs Through Its Fuel Bill

JetBlue now faces the question of whether its fourth-quarter margin improves as the airline expects while fuel prices keep climbing. Delivering on that outlook would strengthen the argument that fares can keep pace with fuel until sustained operating profitability arrives next year.

Caution is advised after JBLU stock's rally today. Those exposed to the airline should size their positions carefully given its ongoing losses and creditor scrutiny.
