Shares of Vulcan Materials (VMC) rose 5.8% on Thursday, October 29, 2026, while the S&P 500 slipped 0.3%. The gain came as the company reported its third-quarter results , alongside increases between 4.7% and 6.2% for all four companies on its peer list during the same session. So what was in Vulcan's quarter, and how much of the gain was its own?

Vulcan Beat On Earnings But Missed On Revenue

Adjusted earnings were $2.83 per share, against an estimate of $2.81. Revenue came in at $2.18 billion, falling short of the $2.24 billion analysts expected.

Vulcan calls itself the nation's largest producer of construction aggregates. During the quarter, the company shipped fewer tons but charged more for them. Shipments fell 3% from a year earlier, and management said favorable weather had helped the prior-year quarter. After adjusting for the product mix, average selling prices rose 5%. Management said its adjusted EBITDA margin, a profit measure it uses, widened by 20 basis points to 32.3%.

Being the largest producer does not keep volumes from slipping. For example, Tesla still sells 54% of US electric cars, yet its deliveries slid from 1.81 million in 2023 to 1.64 million in 2025. Read Trefis Big Story: How Tesla Blundered .

Management expects about $2.4 billion of adjusted EBITDA for the full year, a reduced forecast for 2026. On its second-quarter call, it had guided to a range of $2.4 billion to $2.6 billion. The company expects this result even with over $100 million of higher energy costs, noting the year would have come in near the midpoint of its full-year outlook without them. For 2027, management expects aggregates prices to grow by mid to high single digits, and the company said it targets earnings growth again in 2027. Management also said its footprint is well aligned with data center development, while a lack of housing affordability and a challenging rate environment are holding back home building.

Did Vulcan Rise On Its Own Or With Peers?

Vulcan advanced alongside its peers. Martin Marietta Materials , CRH, Eagle Materials and Knife River, the four companies on its Trefis peer list, rose between 4.7% and 6.2% in the same session. Vulcan's gain sat inside that range, landing ahead of the 4.8% rise at Martin Marietta and the 4.7% increases at CRH and Eagle, but behind Knife River. The materials sector as a whole rose far less: the XLB fund tracking it gained 1.3%. So this was a move by Vulcan and its peers together, well ahead of materials stocks in general.

Where Does Vulcan Stock Stand After The Gain?

Vulcan had not risen this much in a single session at any point in the prior 365 days. The last move at least this large was a 7.8% fall on February 17, 2026.

Even after Thursday, Vulcan stock is down 3.5% over the twelve months to October 29, 2026, against a 13.3% gain for the S&P 500. The shares reached their highest close in that time of $330.37 on February 10, 2026, and hit their lowest of $240.83 on September 18, 2026. The stock has gained 14.6% since September 30, though Thursday's close of $280.31 still sat about 15% below the February high.

Vulcan is expected to release its next report, covering the fourth quarter of 2026, in February 2027. The price the company receives for its aggregates is the measure to watch there, and management said it will give more detail on its 2027 plans early in 2027.
