Nucor (NUE) stock fell 8.3% on Thursday, November 5, 2026, in a session that saw the S&P 500 lose 4.4%. The company issued no announcement, earnings report or filing around the move, and all four companies on its peer list fell as well. So did Nucor simply fall with the market, or did its peer group fall harder?

Nucor Sells Its Steel Across Much Of The Economy

On its October 27 call, management said data centers make up about 15% of Nucor's backlog, while naming chips and technology, utilities, heavy equipment, shipbuilding and defense among the company's other strong markets. So Nucor's orders depend on spending across the economy, not on any one industry.

Management also said demand is very healthy, calling the third quarter Nucor's strongest in more than three years with earnings of $5.80 a share. It expects steel mill shipments to finish 2026 closer to the higher end of its 5% to 10% growth range.

The November 5 fall reached across the market, with the Nasdaq Composite dropping 5.5% that session, more than the S&P 500.

Did Nucor Fall With Its Peers?

Yes, all four companies on Nucor's peer list fell more than the S&P 500 that session. Steel Dynamics lost 7.6%, a drop close to Nucor's, and Cleveland-Cliffs lost 12.2%. Commercial Metals and Reliance, the other two peers, fell less than Nucor did.

The wider materials sector held up better. The SPDR fund for the sector, XLB , fell 2.9%, marking a smaller drop than the S&P 500. So Nucor moved with its peer group, and that group fell harder than both the market and the materials sector.

Where Does Nucor Stock Stand After A Rare Drop?

In the year before November 5, Nucor had not moved this much in a single session, up or down. The drop left the shares at $245.68, coming days after the stock hit its highest close of that year at $277.65 on November 2, 2026.

Over the full year, the stock has still come a long way. Nucor returned 72.3% over the past twelve months, against 9.9% for the S&P 500, and its lowest close in that time was $142.66 on November 10, 2025.

At the November 5 close, Nucor traded at 1.6 times its sales over the twelve months to July 2026, against 3.2 times for the S&P 500. Nucor's fourth-quarter earnings are due in January 2027, with management expecting them to be in line with or modestly higher than the third quarter's.
