Quick Read

  • Generating $14,000 monthly requires roughly $4.5 million split equally between SCHV and IDV , producing a combined 3.7% yield.

  • IDV 's 5.7% yield supplies 76% of the income, but foreign withholding taxes and currency swings can significantly reduce actual payouts.

  • Both funds pay quarterly with uneven distributions, so keeping several months of cash reserves prevents spending from outpacing income.

If you do some back-of-the-napkin math, a $14,000 monthly check equals $168,000 a year. That pays for a comfortable retirement: a paid-off house in a pricey city, regular travel and some room to help family. Split one portfolio equally between Schwab U.S. Large-Cap Value ETF( NYSEARCA:SCHV ) and iShares International Select Dividend ETF( CBOE:IDV ), and you'd need roughly $4.5 million to get there.

All figures reflect prices on October 29, 2026, and in this instance, yield here means the past year's dividends divided by today's share price. SCHV yields about 1.8%, while IDV yields about 5.7%. Split them 50/50 and the combined yield comes out near 3.7%. Divide the $14,000 monthly target, annualized, by that combined yield, and you land on the $4.5 million figure.

Schwab U.S. Large-Cap Value ETF Brings Breadth and Growth

For those unfamiliar, SCHV is a broad index fund. It owns big U.S. companies that trade cheaply compared with their earnings or assets. Think banks, oil majors, drugmakers, and industrial companies. Half the portfolio goes to SCHV, about $2.25 million.

Over the past year, it distributed $0.63 per share. With shares near $35, that's a 1.8% yield. At $2.25 million, SCHV generates about $40,300 a year in income. SCHV tracks value stocks, with income as a secondary result. That low yield is why this portfolio needs $4.5 million. A pure income fund would get you there with less money.

What you get for it is breadth and growth. In its latest filing, its biggest single position made up just 3% of assets. The share price is up about 202% over 10 years. Its payouts have been steady too: quarterly dividends this year stayed between $0.14 and $0.16 per share.

iShares International Select Dividend ETF Supplies Most of the Cash

IDV picks high-dividend stocks in developed countries outside the U.S. It ranks companies by yield, so it tilts toward mature, cash-rich businesses. Britain is its biggest country exposure, according to ETF Research Center. IDV makes up the remaining half of the portfolio, also about $2.25 million.

It distributed $2.42 per share over the past year, and shares trade near $43. That works out to a 5.7% yield. It's high, but still under 6%, which we'd call ultra-high. At $2.25 million, IDV throws off roughly $127,700 a year. Its expense ratio, the annual fee the fund takes out, is 0.5%.

Foreign income gets taxed and converted before it reaches you. Foreign governments often withhold tax on dividends at the source. In a taxable brokerage account, a fund can pass those taxes through to shareholders, and each shareholder treats their share as taxes they paid themselves under 26 U.S.C. § 853(b)(2). You can then usually claim a credit or a deduction for them, per IRS Publication 17.

Inside an IRA, it works differently. The account's income isn't taxed until you withdraw it, per IRS Publication 550. So you can't claim a credit, and the withheld tax is simply gone.

Currency swings matter too. When the dollar strengthens, pounds and euros convert into fewer dollars, shrinking your payout. IDV's checks also bounce around more than a typical U.S. fund's: one quarterly payment came to just $0.19 a share in March 2025, while another hit $1.10 in June 2026.

Uneven Checks Behind a Steady Annual Total

Pairing a modest U.S. yielder with a higher-yielding international fund balances growth and income. SCHV adds diversification and growth potential. IDV brings the cash.

But the money won't show up as a neat $14,000 deposit every month. Both funds pay quarterly, and IDV's June payments have run much bigger than its March ones. Keeping a few months of spending in cash covers the gaps between paydays.

The setup calls for about $4.5 million, split equally, and roughly 76% of the income comes from overseas. That puts a lot on one fund's foreign payouts. Once a year, compare IDV's trailing 12-month payout with its share price. If that yield drops, the portfolio you need grows, and you'll want to know before your spending outpaces your income.
