Investing.com -- Lyntris Inc (NYSE:LYNX) shares gained 2.1% in premarket trading Tuesday following the announcement of a $6.48 million contract expansion with the U.S. Navy to develop precision formation flight capabilities for unmanned aircraft systems.
The contract extends Lyntris' existing Maritime Tactical Command and Control (MTC2) agreement with the Navy and marks the company's expansion from maritime command and control into autonomous unmanned aircraft. The project is supported jointly by Portfolio Acquisition Executive Mission Systems and PAE Robotic and Autonomous Systems.
Under the contract, Lyntris will combine its Dragonflight swarm autonomy technology with Robinson Unmanned's SPARTAN unmanned aircraft to enable small drone fleets to establish, hold and adapt deliberate geometries in three dimensions. The new precision formation capabilities will extend Dragonflight to establish and maintain three-dimensional geometries.
"Our teams have supported the Navy's command and control mission since 2000, and that relationship and long-term expertise opened the door to this work," said Daniel Gelyana, Executive Vice President of Global C2 at Lyntris.
The precision formation capability is designed to allow groups of autonomous aircraft to function as coordinated mission elements rather than individual vehicles. Different geometries can support distributed sensing, communications relay, defensive screening, deception and protection of higher-value platforms, according to the company.
Robinson Unmanned's SPARTAN will provide a Group 2 platform designed with a Modular Open Systems Approach. The compact coaxial architecture combines endurance and payload capacity with all-weather performance.
Lyntris and Robinson Unmanned plan to demonstrate the capability later this year.
