On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Nov. 4, 2026, Magnite(NASDAQ:MGNI) reported total contribution ex-TAC, or revenue minus traffic acquisition costs, of $201 million, beating expectations by over $10 million. Management raised its full-year outlook across the board, including free cash flow growth of more than 60%, as streaming ad growth and cost controls widened margins. Higher ad volumes and cost controls boost free cash flow.
Three things management said stand out.
1. Connected TV Growth Drives Multiyear Expansion
Connected television, or streaming ad inventory, now accounts for 53% of Magnite's business, excluding traffic acquisition costs. Management sees automated trading as the standard method for buyers to purchase streaming ads.
We remain confident in our ability to outperform the market and expect a long-term 3 to 5 year growth rate in CTV of approximately 25%.
-- Michael Barrett, CEO
2. Political Advertising Surges Past Earlier Management Targets
Political advertising reached $12 million in the third quarter, with about 20% of that demand flowing through ClearLine, the company's direct-buying tool connecting advertisers to streaming publishers. Political spending is cyclical, and Barrett noted it crowded out other advertising in some markets. The 2027 outlook calls for growth of more than 15% excluding political, or more than 10% as reported.
In total, we are now expecting political contribution ex-TAC to be over $40 million for 2026 versus the $15 million previously projected.
-- Michael Barrett, CEO
3. Infrastructure Upgrades Slash Streaming Processing Expenses
Moving data processing from the cloud to in-house servers kept cloud costs roughly flat year over year, while total operating expenses held steady at $154 million. This operational efficiency widened the adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) margin to 42%.
Through this effort, we have reduced our cost per billion ad requests by over 50% year-over-year for streaming.
-- Brian Gephart, CFO
Looking Ahead
Automated ad buying accelerates across streaming networks as ad server technology locks in core publisher relationships. Magnite relies on in-house infrastructure efficiency, preferred supply status, and direct-buying tools to widen its competitive moat while its open web business faces pressure as AI answer engines cut into search traffic. Management expects the DV+ segment to stay roughly flat or grow in the low single digits
We expect strong growth ahead for programmatic and CTV, and our incredibly strategic role positions us to continue this momentum and drive continued share gains.
-- Michael Barrett, CEO
