Ciena (CIEN) stock returned 98.4% in the year to October 28, 2026, compared with 13.7% for the S&P 500. Shares closed that day at $363.21, remaining 42% below their June 2 high of $627. Ciena delivered four quarterly earnings reports over those twelve months. The first arrived on December 11, 2025, for fiscal Q4 2025, and a news report said that shares jumped afterward. The stock fell on the day of each of the next three reports: by 12.9% on March 5, 13.7% on June 4 and 10.4% on September 3, 2026. These updates lifted Ciena's profit margin substantially, but not the share of sales it converts into cash. So how much should those four reports change your view of the stock?

Ciena Nearly Tripled Its Profit Margin In A Year

Ciena posted an operating margin of 18.1% for fiscal Q3 2026, the quarter ended August 1, compared with 6.2% a year earlier. The margin rose in each of the four quarters reported over the year, meaning every release showed the company keeping more of its sales as operating profit. Revenue expanded as well, reaching $1.67 billion in fiscal Q3 2026, up 37% from a year earlier.

During the September 3, 2026 call, management said customer demand comes from large and growing investment in data center infrastructure. Executives said that about 50% of Ciena's business is now directly with hyperscalers, the largest cloud companies. Ciena finished fiscal Q3 2026 with an $8.5 billion backlog of orders taken but not yet delivered, and management expects this figure to exceed $10 billion by the end of the fiscal year.

You Pay Less For Ciena's Profit, More For Sales

You now pay about half as much for each dollar of Ciena's profit as you did a year ago. The stock traded at 76.4 times earnings at the end of September 2026, down from 146.7 times a year before. For each dollar of sales, however, you pay nearly twice as much: 8.3 times at the end of September 2026, against 4.5 times a year before. The two multiples diverged as Ciena's profit grew faster than its share price, while its share price climbed faster than its sales.

Even so, the stock is far from cheap against the market . Shares traded at 78.8 times earnings at the October 28 close, compared with 22.6 for the S&P 500. That price appears to assume that Ciena keeps its margin rising.

Ciena's Profit Has Grown Faster Than Its Cash Flow

Ciena converted 13.5% of its sales into free cash flow over the twelve months to August 1, 2026, about the same share as the 13.3% seen in the twelve months before. This means Ciena collects about as much cash on each dollar of sales as it did a year ago, even though it books far more profit on each one. The company posted a 14.1% operating margin over those same twelve months, compared with 5.6% the year before. In the latest quarter, profit rose but free cash flow fell, dropping to $116 million in fiscal Q3 2026 from $135 million a year earlier.

On the September 3 call, management said it expects cash from operations to fall in fiscal Q4 2026, as Ciena pays for long-term agreements that secure key components through 2029. Free cash flow is the measure to watch when Ciena reports its fiscal Q4 2026 results, expected in December 2026.
