How Much Are Prices Adding To Coca-Cola's Sales?
Coca-Cola's price mix, the change in what each drink sold brings in, added just 1 point in the third quarter of fiscal 2026. Management said four points of pricing actions were partly offset by three points of unfavorable mix. This drag mainly involved the mix of countries the company sold in, the timing of investments, and the mix of drinks.
Coca-Cola raised prices, but a larger share of its sales came from places and products that bring in less. Some of that shift is deliberate. Management is selling affordable packages, such as its 500ml Super Can in Europe, to recruit consumers. Analysts asked about pricing on Coca-Cola's October 27, 2026 call, including how its approach to price mix would change in 2027.
Coca-Cola Wants Price Mix To Match Volume Growth
Management wants price mix to contribute as much to sales growth as volume does. On the call, it said the goal is 2 to 3 points of each. Organic revenue grew 7% in the third quarter. Most of that gain came from selling more drinks, as unit cases grew 5%. Management said concentrate sales ran ahead of unit cases because of when the concentrate was shipped.
Volume has not always grown at that pace. Management said Coca-Cola's volume has grown at around 2% a year over two years, the low end of its own goal. Coca-Cola's sales were $13.4 billion in the quarter, up 7.4% from a year earlier. Shareholders pay 27.3 times earnings for the stock, against 22.8 for the S&P 500, so the price appears to assume that sales keep growing at this pace.
A premium multiple is a bet that the growth it assumes keeps arriving. Tesla shows how much can ride on that bet: it is still priced at about $1.3 trillion, about 13 times sales, after its deliveries fell two years in a row before a partial rebound this year. What Has Coca-Cola Said About Prices In 2027?
Management has said two-thirds of the mix drag in the third quarter came from factors it thinks are manageable going into 2027. It also said that, setting aside the Topo Chico issue and the timing of investments, price mix for the year is roughly within its target band. It has not said how much it expects pricing to add in 2027, calling it a little early for specifics. The company said inflation is one of several factors it is weighing.
On costs, management said pressures have risen in aggregate, mainly from logistics and transportation, while its commodity exposure remains manageable. It is working with its bottlers on plans for 2027.
Price mix, measured against management's goal of 2 to 3 points, is the number to watch when Coca-Cola reports its fourth quarter, expected in February 2027.
How To Act On KO?
Not necessarily on Coca-Cola alone, if your goal is long-term wealth. Wealth is built by owning the companies that keep outperforming, the leaders of their industries, wherever they are. Here is one company from Coca-Cola's own industry that has beaten it. Over the five years to October 2026, Coca-Cola Consolidated stock rose 447%, while Coca-Cola stock rose 91%.
Finding companies like these takes comparison across industries and sectors, and that is what the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio does. It holds 30 quality companies in equal weight and, since its inception in September 2020, has returned more than 105%, ahead of a benchmark that combines the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap and Russell 2000.
