OSI Systems (OSIS) Q1 Results Clash With Margin Compression

Trade OSIS on Coinbase

OSI Systems came into this earnings print riding a modest rebound, up over the past month but still carrying a weaker 90 day return. Then Q1 FY2027 dropped and the stock fell about 4% on the day. That move masks what actually hit the tape. Revenue for the quarter landed at about US$403 million and adjusted earnings per share reached roughly US$1.66, both tied to record first quarter results with free cash flow comfortably ahead of reported profit. The real story is a business generating cash even as the market trades the headline drop.

OSI Systems Bull Case: Backlog And Services On Trial

Optimists argue that OSI Systems can turn its contract pipeline and richer service mix into structurally better profitability.

"The main factor that has to go right is that OSI Systems continues to grow higher margin Security, RF and service revenues while sustaining the recent margin improvement in Healthcare. This would allow the whole group to support structurally higher profitability on its existing contract base."

Q1 points in the right direction but with caveats. Security and RF activity helped lift total revenue and adjusted EPS to record Q1 levels, and backlog reached about US$2.1b. At the same time, gross and operating margins compressed and Healthcare moved into a small operating loss, so the profitability step change is not yet secured.

OSI Systems Bear Case: Security Mix And Geography Risk

Skeptics focus on whether contract concentration and regional exposure eventually show up as pressure on the P&L.

"Security revenues already declined 7% year over year in the most recent quarter and revenues tied to Mexico Security contracts were about US$150 million lower than the prior year. If other geographies do not offset this pressure, OSI Systems could face weaker group revenue and reduced earnings."

Latest numbers argue that this concern remains live but not decisive. Security revenue returned to growth in Q1 and the record backlog plus strong RF bookings suggest other regions are absorbing some of the Mexico drag. Yet gross margin compression and cautious full year revenue guidance show that mix and geographic risk are still flowing through results.
