Reddit( NYSE:RDDT ) shares fell 25.27% in Friday's session, trading at $96.85 as of 9:44 AM ET. The stock is now down 35.55% over the past week and 57.87% year to date. Reddit only recently joined the S&P 500, so ETF investors now have to work out where that loss lands. Most index fund holders feel very little of it. Owners of one social media fund feel a lot more.
Search Traffic Warning Overshadows a Strong Quarter
The selloff came even though the earnings report itself beat expectations. Reddit posted third-quarter GAAP EPS of $1.40, ahead of the $1.32 consensus. Revenue reached $894.96M, exceeding estimates, and grew 53% year over year. Advertising revenue rose 54% to $847M. Same-day coverage from CNBC and Barron's put Reddit among Friday's biggest decliners after the report.

Traffic was the problem. Management said search referrals dropped by more than 1 million per week on average in October. It also warned that total daily active uniques could fall by a low double-digit percentage in the fourth quarter from a base of 130.3 million. Chief Executive Steve Huffman put most of the blame on Google's AI features: "The reality is the AI mode does not drive traffic, not for us and not to anybody as far as I know." U.S. daily active uniques already fell 2% year over year. Fourth-quarter revenue guidance of $1.00B to $1.03B did little to calm investors.
Social Media ETF Carries the Heaviest Exposure
Among widely held funds, the Global X Social Media ETF( NASDAQ:SOCL ) has the most concentrated exposure. In its most recent portfolio filing, dated July 31, 2026, the fund held 54,619 Reddit shares worth $7.68 million. That came to about 8.46% of net assets, putting Reddit among the fund's four largest positions alongside Tencent and NAVER.
At that weighting, today's Reddit decline alone would take about 2.14 percentage points off the fund. The real drag is probably smaller, because Reddit's slide since July has likely reduced its weight. The fund itself was down 2.81% in the session at $39.54. It is off 8.13% over the past week and 28.24% year to date, so Reddit's slump has hit this fund for months.
Where Index Fund Holders Actually Own Reddit
Newer, smaller companies show up in fewer broad index funds than megacaps do, and when they are included, their weights are small. The Invesco QQQ Trust( NASDAQ:QQQ ) did not hold Reddit in its June 30, 2026 holdings. That fits the rules: the Nasdaq-100 only includes NASDAQ-listed companies, and Reddit trades on the NYSE. QQQ inched from 696.72 at the time of Reddit's filing to 695.89, which is effectively flat.
Since Reddit joined the S&P 500, S&P 500 trackers such as the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF( NYSEARCA:VOO ) and the iShares Core S&P 500 ETF( NYSEARCA:IVV ) now own it. Both charge 0.03% a year. Their current Reddit weights were not available. Still, Reddit's market value of about $14.15B is small next to the megacaps that dominate a market-cap-weighted index. A 25% drop in a holding that small barely moves a core S&P 500 position in a 401(k) or IRA.
Overlap Risk Hides in Thematic Add-Ons
The bigger risk for retirement savers comes from piling funds. An investor with a core S&P 500 fund who adds a social media ETF owns Reddit twice, and the thematic fund raises the stake far above its index weight. In SOCL, a handful of names each make up about 8% to 10% of assets, so one company's bad quarter can drive the fund's daily return. Before adding a thematic ETF on top of a core holding, investors can compare the two funds' published holdings to see how much they overlap.
Reddit's case also shows that exposure can grow over time. Index inclusion added the stock to trillions of dollars in passive portfolios, and the weight it has there will rise or fall with its market value.
What to Watch Next
Keep an eye on Reddit's fourth-quarter user numbers and on how its logged-in-only test in select non-U.S. markets plays out. Huffman told analysts "We will likely be trading reach for engagement." Management says logged-in and app users generate over 80% of monetization, so engagement may matter more than overall user counts. For ETF holders, the next portfolio disclosures from SOCL and the S&P 500 trackers will show how far Reddit's weight has fallen.
