Principal Financial Group walked into this Q3 2026 earnings release with a relatively flat trading backdrop. The stock is roughly unchanged today, up about 0.04% around US$112, after a slightly weaker 30 day run. On the surface that looks like a shrug.
The headline tells a different story. Principal posted Q3 basic earnings per share of about US$2.95 on revenue of roughly US$4.6b, and trailing 12 month earnings are materially higher than a year ago. For a life and retirement insurer that is highly focused on profitability, that earnings power is the key factor, not the muted share price move on the screen.

Evaluating Principal's Margin Story Against Q3 Delivery
The bullish view hangs on Principal Financial Group turning retirement income and asset consolidation into a durable earnings engine.
"Growth in retirement transfer deposits of around 30% to 35% year over year, along with steady recurring deposits and over US$7b of roll ins over the past 12 months, points to further consolidation of assets on Principal Financial Group's ecosystem."
Q3 results show this thesis moving forward. Roll ins over the trailing year reached US$7.4b and Q3 roll ins rose, while recurring deposits grew 8%. Retirement & Income Solutions delivered roughly 42% pretax margins, above its target range. Higher group margins and 12% year to date EPS growth indicate that retirement scale is now feeding through to profitability.

Principal Financial Group: Flows Still Undercut The Story
Bearish investors argue that Principal Financial Group's earnings strength could be masking a weaker engine in asset management flows.
"Although Principal Financial Group highlights strong recent EPS and margin expansion, the roughly $11b of net outflows concentrated in U.S. active equity strategies that account for just over 5% of assets suggest that if style headwinds persist, fee revenue from this part of asset management could decline further and weigh on total revenue growth."
Q3 data does not ease that concern. Asset management revenue only edged up once divestitures are stripped out, while segment pretax earnings slipped and company level net cash flow turned negative by about US$11b. Positive private markets and ETF inflows help, yet they have not fully offset the drag from active equity outflows.
Hunt For Quiet Fundamental Shifts
Principal Financial Group recently reported solid earnings while its share price stayed relatively subdued. The real opportunity may lie in stocks where improving fundamentals are not yet fully reflected in their valuations.
