What Rio Tinto Group Holders Got Right

Trade RIO on Coinbase

If you had paused on 23 October 2025 and asked whether Rio Tinto Group was worth backing as analysts argued over aging Pilbara assets, copper growth options and decarbonisation costs, the answer over the next twelve months turned out to be very real in your brokerage account. For Rio Tinto Group shareholders, the return over the past year was 22.8%, including dividends. If that decision were in front of you again today, how much weight would you give to long-term critical minerals demand versus the risk of rising project and ESG pressures?

The Argument Rio Tinto Investors Were Actually Having

The shares cost £53.01 at the start of the period, and you were essentially being asked which Rio Tinto Group story felt more believable.

The bullish narrative put Fair Value at £67.78, a price that only made sense if its copper, lithium and aluminum push really did support stronger long run earnings. That view leaned on assumptions of 4.6% annual revenue growth and profit margins edging up from 19.1% to 20.0% by 2028.

The bearish camp saw Fair Value closer to £39.91, a level that reflected concern about aging Pilbara iron ore assets and rising costs. Their assumptions included revenue declining 1.8% a year and margins slipping from 19.1% to 16.9%, with decarbonisation spending and ESG pressures biting into future profits.

What The Results Changed For Rio Tinto Group

Rio Tinto Group's H1 2026 report gave copper and aluminum optimists fresh support. Revenue was US$31,028m and net income reached US$6,664m, versus US$26,873m and US$4,528m in H1 2025, with net margin moving from 16.8% to 21.5%. Cost and project-risk worriers still had ammunition from rising input and ESG pressures, so the evidence cut both ways.

The lesson is simple: when a miner leans on a margin story, track net income and net margin in the next set of results and test whether project updates line up with that profitability pitch.

What Rio Tinto's Recent Run Now Assumes

Rio Tinto Group trades at £62.31 today after a 22.8% gain over the past year, with this bullish Narrative placing Fair Value above that level based on execution in growth projects and cost discipline.

The Narrative argues the current price still does not fully credit Rio Tinto translating copper and lithium expansion into durable margins and steadier cash flow through the cycle.

"Rapid ramp-up and production expansion in growth projects (Oyu Tolgoi copper, Simandou iron ore, Rincon lithium, and Arcadium integration) are poised to significantly increase future sales volumes, especially in copper and lithium, aligning with accelerating global electrification and energy transition, directly supporting long-term revenue growth. Diversification into battery metals (lithium, copper) through acquisitions and organic project delivery positions Rio Tinto to capture rising demand in electric vehicles, stationary energy storage, and grid infrastructure, which are expected to have structurally higher pricing and margins than mature bulk commodities, driving earnings and improving margin resilience."

Rio Tinto And The Magnet Question

Rio Tinto is a critical minerals story, but the opportunity set extends beyond copper and iron.

Electric cars, wind turbines and advanced electronics all rely on powerful permanent magnets made from processed rare earth materials.

One specialist miner is moving further into magnet manufacturing and recycling, aiming to supply those materials at scale.

Its agreements with major customers and government bodies establish long-term offtake for output.

Policy support for domestic critical minerals is encouraging this expansion, and rising magnet needs could make that rare earth capacity increasingly important.
