Sasol Is Up 173%, But The Story Isn't Finished

Trade Sasol on Coinbase

Sasol's year has been shaped by concrete projects, not just headlines, and one proposal stood out. Mozambique opened talks on a potential $250 million offshore gas development that could feed more gas into South Africa, extending the life of a key supply chain. Investors who held Sasol from the start of the year are up 173.0%, including dividends. If you were weighing a purchase back on 2026-01-01, what would you have needed to believe about future gas demand, margins and regulation to support this outcome?

This theme extends beyond Sasol. See which of 17 top copper producer stocks may still merit a closer look.

The Two Sasol Stories Investors Had In Front Of Them

The shares cost ZAR106 at the start, and anyone looking at Sasol then had to decide which story about its future business was more persuasive.

On the optimistic side, the bull case pointed to a Fair Value of ZAR134, a rough guide to what the stock might be worth if its assumptions played out, built on 4.0% annual revenue growth and profit margins rising toward 8.1% over three years.

The bearish narrative anchored on a Fair Value of ZAR70 and leaned on the risk that tighter climate rules and stranded coal assets would pressure profitability even if revenue grew 4.2% a year and margins moved toward 9.6%.

What The Sasol Results Put To The Test

The Mozambique talks on a potential $250 million offshore gas project gave Sasol bulls fresh support for the idea that regional gas supply could run longer, though it also reminded bears that future regulation and depletion risks still mattered. Reported numbers added weight. Revenue reached ZAR149,731 million in H2 2026 and net income moved to ZAR11,908 million, with net margin at 8.0%, so the evidence leaned toward the optimistic case.

The key lesson travels well. When a thesis depends on better profitability, track the reported net margin against what was assumed at the start and see whether new projects, like Mozambique gas, align with that profitability story or primarily add volume.

What Sasol's 173% Run Already Assumes

Sasol trades at ZAR286 today, a sharp move from ZAR106 at the start of the year. The selected Narrative's fair value sits below that price, despite highlighting improving guidance, margin work and a bigger role for lower carbon energy within the group.

A buyer now effectively banks on sustained earnings resilience and cleaner energy progress. The question is how that stacks up against the Narrative's focus on fossil reliance, high gearing and chemicals weakness.

"Heavy reliance on fossil fuel technologies, operational setbacks, weak chemicals demand, high debt, and ESG pressures collectively threaten profit growth and long-term investor confidence. Sasol's core reliance on coal-to-liquids and gas-to-liquids technology exposes it to long-term decarbonization pressures, rising carbon tax and regulatory risk, and potential demand erosion for fossil-based products, which could compress net margins and reduce future earnings."

Sasol And The Metals Behind Change

Sasol puts your attention on fuels and chemicals today. One step away sits a different kind of resource story.

Cleaner transport, power projects and advanced electronics all lean on powerful magnets. Those magnets depend on rare earth materials that do not come from traditional oil and gas fields.

Another business is working to process those minerals and turn them into finished magnet products. Government contracts and long-term supply deals help shape its planning and capital commitments.

As magnet demand evolves, the role of a miner that can refine, recycle and manufacture could shift. That is where some investors may look next.
