Seagate Technology( NASDAQ:STX ) just raised its dividend, and the payout still looks tiny next to the share price. StreetInsider reported that the board lifted the quarterly dividend 2.7% to $0.76 per share. StreetInsider put the yield after the raise at about 0.5%. At this morning's price of $624.20, the forward yield comes to roughly 0.49%. The new dividend is payable January 7, 2027, to holders of record on December 23, 2026.
Why a Shrinking Yield Signals a Surging Stock
Yield is the annual dividend divided by the share price. If a company raises its dividend and the yield still shrinks, the share price has risen faster than the payout. A year ago, Seagate paid $0.72 per quarter, and the stock traded at $228.96, for a yield near 1.26%. Since then, the quarterly dividend has grown about 5.6%. Over the same stretch, the shares rose 172.63%, and they are up 127.42% year to date.

Margin Gains From Mozaic Drove the Run
The rally reflects pricing power on Seagate's HAMR-based Mozaic drives. Beyond the dividend news StreetInsider reported, non-GAAP gross margin went from 42.2% in fiscal Q2 2026 to 47.0%, then 52.7%, and reached a record 57.8% in the September quarter. Revenue came in at $4.23 billion, up 61.0% year over year, and non-GAAP EPS of $7.68 exceeded the $7.40 consensus. Microsoft qualified Mozaic technology for Azure ( NASDAQ:MSFT ). Management said most nearline supply is already allocated under long-term agreements through calendar 2028. CEO Dave Mosley said, "Everything we can make above and beyond our plans is being spoken for."
Income Seekers vs. Total-Return Holders
For income investors, the 0.5% yield StreetInsider cited offers very little. Management favors buybacks, with Mosley saying returns will come "with share repurchases serving as our primary vehicle, complemented by dividends." Seagate has $4.4 billion left on its repurchase authorization and plans to "significantly increase share purchases starting in calendar 2027." That shift favors total-return holders, and so does a balance sheet that management plans to be "net cash positive exiting this calendar year."
Risk: Storage Demand Has Always Been Cyclical
Hard drive demand has typically tracked hyperscaler spending. With the stock priced for record margins, it has little room for error. The pullback has already started: shares fell 31.92% over the past month and 6.54% in early trading today, even after the earnings beat. Management also pointed to scrap during product changes and higher external component costs as sources of pressure.
What to Watch Before the Next Earnings Report
Seagate guided December-quarter revenue to $4.80 billion and non-GAAP EPS to $9.20. A bullish result would mean another step up in gross margin, Mosaic 4 qualifications with more cloud customers, and pricing for 2028 supply locked in at higher levels. A bearish result would mean margins stalling, transition costs growing, or customers delaying orders. Any of those could push the shares lower and the yield higher.
Verdict: A Small Yield With a Big Message
The 0.5% yield StreetInsider cited shows that investors now value Seagate as a margin-growth story. That makes gross margin and buybacks the numbers to track, and it leaves the dividend as a minor part of the stock's total return.
