Shrimp, sequels and ‘80s classics | Paul W. Smith

" Outta' My Mind on a Monday Moanin' "

Imagine: You're in your usual Monday morning business meeting where you and everyone else are expected to come up with an idea to help your company do better.

So, you suggest an idea that the company tried back in 2023. Everyone around the table kind of smirks and wonders if you have finally lost your mind, cracking under the intense pressure to grow the company. They snicker because the same idea caused the company to lose $11 million last time and led to the company filing for bankruptcy.

They thought you were an idiot, but you get the last laugh. The "powers that be" loved the idea and now, your company, Red Lobster, has announced the return of unlimited shrimp! This great idea led to the aforementioned mega financial catastrophe, bankruptcy and the closing of 99 stores.

It reminds me of the phrase, often erroneously attributed to Albert Einstein, "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result."

We will see how it goes the second time around. I bet I know.

Astonishingly, these are some of the movies that turn 40 years old this year.

  1. Top Gun: One of 1986's biggest box office hits, pushing Tom Cruise into superstardom.

  2. Crocodile Dundee: A fish out of water comedy the world embraced.

  3. Aliens: James Cameron's take on the sequel.

  4. Platoon: Oliver Stone's Vietnam War Best Picture winner.

  5. Back to School: Rodney Dangerfield showed he could bring us 80's humor beyond stand-up.

  6. The Golden Child: The genius of Eddie Murphy.
