Memory and hard drive stocks are splitting, with chipmakers rallying behind a South Korean supplier's record quarter while a hard drive maker slips despite a strong report of its own. Shares of SK Hynix( NASDAQ:SKHY ) are at $156, up 7% in morning trading.
Micron Technology( NASDAQ:MU ) stock is at $961, up 3%. Seagate Technology( NASDAQ:STX ) stock is at $653, down 2%, moving against the rally in memory chipmakers.
SK Hynix's Record Quarter Lifts Memory Chipmakers
Late on October 27, SK Hynix released its Q3 2026 results, posting record revenue and operating profit on strong AI-driven demand, higher memory prices and early shipments of its newest high-bandwidth memory (HBM) product, HBM4. Management at SK Hynix said more than 50% of its 2027 to 2028 capacity is already committed under long-term agreements, and it repeated that the AI memory shortage could persist through 2030 as demand extends to enterprises, robotics and autonomous driving. RBC Capital Markets analyst Srini Pajjuri wrote on October 26 that robust AI demand and a shift toward memory-intensive agentic AI continue to outpace supply.

Micron is rising in sympathy as the most direct U.S.-listed read-across on dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) and HBM. On the company's September 30 earnings call, Micron's president and chief operating officer, Manish Bhatia, described the same constraint: "We made the statement that we really don't have line of sight to when supply and demand balance."
Seagate reported on October 27 that its Q1 FY2027 revenue reached $4.23 billion, ahead of a FactSet consensus of $4.15 billion. Seagate's adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $7.68 topped FactSet's consensus.
For the December quarter, Seagate guided revenue to a midpoint of $4.8 billion and adjusted EPS to a midpoint of $9.20, both above analyst expectations. Shareholders got a raise, as Seagate lifted its quarterly dividend to $0.76 per share from $0.74.
Why Seagate Isn't Sharing in the Memory Rally
Wedbush Securities analyst Matt Bryson said on CNBC on October 27 that Seagate's guidance implies a gross margin of 60% by his estimate, a sign that gross margin growth is slowing. Bryson called the slowdown cyclical. Seagate posted a 57.8% adjusted gross margin, which puts the focus on how much further pricing can lift profitability.
Supply is the other worry hanging over hard drive makers. Toshiba said on October 2 that it shipped the first drives from an expanded nearline (high-capacity data center) production line and aims to nearly double its annual capacity. One market analysis reads that as a threat to the tight supply behind Seagate's pricing power, and it remains one interpretation of the slide. On its earnings call, Seagate management said "The vast majority of our Nearline Exabyte supply is now allocated under long-term supply agreements through calendar 2028, with some cloud customer agreements extending through calendar 2030."
SanDisk( NASDAQ:SNDK ) stock is at $1,360, up 4%, rising with the memory chipmakers on its NAND flash business. Western Digital( NASDAQ:WDC ) stock is at $387, up 2%, a smaller gain for Seagate's main hard drive rival. That split suggests traders are separating chip memory from spinning-disk storage.
All five names are down over the past month, and Seagate's 29% one-month decline is the largest of the group. Even so, Seagate stock is up 138% year to date (YTD). Micron stock is up 237% YTD.
Seagate and the Memory Rally Face Their Next Tests
A key question for Seagate is whether its long-term agreements and pricing terms hold as calendar 2028 contracts are negotiated and Toshiba's added capacity increases. The bulls can cite management's comment on the call that "Absolutely everything we can make above and beyond our plans is being spoken for." On the other side, Bryson's view that margin growth is slowing gives the bear case its anchor.
For SK Hynix, the question is whether the memory rally holds once regular trading begins after the group's largest pullback. SK Hynix stock is down 19% over the past month, while Micron, SanDisk and Western Digital are down 11%, 24% and 15%, respectively.
The Federal Reserve announces its rate decision this week. Microsoft( NASDAQ:MSFT ) also reports quarterly results in the same stretch. Alphabet( NASDAQ:GOOGL ) is due as well, and AI spending plans from both companies feed demand for memory and storage (we covered seven of the suppliers riding that expansion, from power to cooling, in a free report you can grab here). Seagate's 2028 contract pricing remains a key question to keep an eye on.
