SkyWest stock just took a hard landing. The shares closed at US$96.54 before the earnings release and now trade near US$82, a single session slide of about 15% that wipes out weeks of gains.
The reaction looks harsh when set against the actual third quarter of 2026 print. SkyWest reported Q3 net income of about US$120 million with basic earnings per share around US$3.10 on revenue of roughly US$1.1b. For short term traders, the gap between expectations and headlines is all that matters today. Long term holders are now forced to weigh this selloff against multi year earnings power, fuel exposure, and the balance between new aircraft spending and debt.

SkyWest bull case: fleet mix and contracts on trial
Optimists argue that SkyWest's dual class fleet and contracted flying should steadily lift the quality of earnings.
"Fleet modernization through significant orders of new E175 aircraft and the planned shift of CRJ700 and CRJ200 airframes into dual-class CRJ550 and CRJ450 configurations is progressing. The move toward an all dual-class regional jet fleet is expected to lift average yields and help net margins as this mix change flows through future results."
Q3 shows real movement toward that goal. Four E175s arrived, seven more are slated for Q4, and 18 are planned for 2027, alongside ongoing CRJ conversions. Block hours and revenue both advanced, and net income held near last year's level despite fuel headwinds and heavy CapEx. This supports the idea that the modernized fleet and contracted E175 flying are already helping earnings resilience.
Bear case: fuel and block hour risks showing up
The main pushback is that fuel exposed flying and partner schedules could quietly erode SkyWest's margin story.
"Higher fuel expenses and changes to partner schedules have already led SkyWest to trim its 2026 earnings outlook, with management now guiding to GAAP EPS in the US$11 area instead of the earlier mid US$11 commentary. Further fuel volatility or reduced block hour growth could weaken revenue and earnings beyond what is currently expected."
That concern is already visible. Q3 prorate fuel expense reached US$66m with pricing at US$4.56 per gallon, and management now expects 2026 GAAP EPS around US$10.60 with 2027 earnings roughly flat. The updated assumptions, including a US$1.20 EPS sensitivity to a US$1 fuel move and modest 2027 block hour growth of 1 to 2%, show that fuel volatility and schedule risk remain active pressure points rather than distant threats.
