Quick Read

  • SOXX splits 3-for-1 on November 5, 2026, tripling each shareholder's count while the fund trades near $492, down 12% over the past month.

  • Global chip revenue hit $298.5 billion in Q1, up 79% year-over-year, but much of the gain was driven by average selling prices that were 57% higher, a factor that can reverse quickly.

  • SOXX's capped-weight structure beat Nvidia-heavy rival SMH in 2026, though AI chipmakers have surged while automotive and industrial names have fallen behind inside the fund.

The iShares Semiconductor ETF( NASDAQ:SOXX ) will split 3-for-1 effective November 5, 2026. The split comes amid a decline. The fund traded near $492 early Thursday, down 12% over the past month. For anyone holding the fund, each share becomes three, and the price per share adjusts in proportion.

What Changes in Your Account on November 5

  • Share count:100 shares become 300. Brokers usually show the new shares within a day or two of the effective date.

  • Per-share price:The quoted price falls to about one-third of the pre-split level, so a quote that looks much lower on November 5 reflects the split and nothing more.

  • Per-share cost basis:Your total basis remains the same and gets spread across three times as many shares. If your broker shows a sudden loss, the basis has not been updated yet; check back later or contact your broker.

  • Listed options:Existing contracts are adjusted so they control the same total value, and holders typically receive more contracts at proportionally lower strike prices.

  • Distributions:Future per-share payouts will be smaller, but since you hold three times the shares, total income is unaffected.

What Stays the Same

At the moment of the split, your position is worth exactly what it was the day before. The fund still tracks the NYSE Semiconductor Index of the 30 largest U.S.-listed chip companies, and the expense ratio remains at 0.33%. A forward split creates no taxable event.

Why Funds Split, and How This One Got Here

Funds usually split to bring the share price down. A lower price makes whole shares easier to buy at brokers that do not offer fractional shares, and it makes each 100-share options contract cheaper. iShares has not published its reason, so treat these as the most common motives only.

This fund last split 3-for-1 on March 7, 2024. The chip rally has driven the price back up since then: the ETF is up over 55% year to date and about 72% over the past year.

Macro Factor: AI Spending Has to Keep Growing

Spending on AI data centers is the biggest driver of these returns. Industry figures from the Semiconductor Industry Association put global chip revenue at $298.5 billion in the first quarter, up 79% from a year earlier. Average selling prices rose 57%, so much of the boom comes from higher prices rather than more units. Prices can drop quickly when demand slows.

The warning sign would be a large cloud provider holding its capital spending guidance flat or cutting it. Read each quarterly earnings report from the hyperscalers, and check the Semiconductor Industry Association's monthly sales release. The same expansion cycle powers a wider cast of suppliers beyond the chipmakers, from power to cooling to networking. (We profiled them in a free AI infrastructure report.) In 2022, PC and smartphone demand faded and inventories built up even as industry revenue remained near record levels.

Fund-Specific Factor: Capped Weights and a Two-Speed Sector

The index limits how much weight its largest companies can have, which spreads the fund's holdings more equally than market-cap weighting would. The VanEck Semiconductor ETF( NASDAQ:SMH ) is more concentrated: Nvidia( NASDAQ:NVDA ) made up 18% of its assets and Taiwan Semiconductor( NYSE:TSM ) 9% in its latest filing. The VanEck fund is up 50% year to date, so the iShares fund's wider mix has produced better returns this year.

Performance within the sector has diverged sharply. Barchart's Rob Isbitts pointed out in a June 3, 2026, column that AI-linked chipmakers have soared while automotive and industrial chip companies have fallen behind. A recovery in analog chips would help this fund more than its Nvidia-heavy rival. Lighter AI orders would still hurt most of its holdings. Check the holdings page on iShares.com after each quarterly rebalance.

Verify Your Cost Basis, Then Track Hyperscaler Spending

Make sure your share count and cost basis have been updated correctly after November 5. After that, focus on hyperscaler capital spending guidance each quarter. A flat or lower outlook from a major cloud buyer would matter far more to this fund than the split, which leaves its risk and valuation unchanged.
