On its earnings call held on Oct. 29, 2026, for its fiscal 2026 fourth quarter ended Sept. 27, Starbucks(NASDAQ:SBUX) announced full-year earnings per share that exceeded the top of its target range. Operating discipline and menu innovation are driving store traffic while keeping expense growth below sales gains. That operational health gives the coffee chain a foundation to compound profits over time. Three things management said on the call stand out.
1. Turnaround Strategy Shifts Into Long-Term Growth
Global same-store sales, or comps, rose 7.2% in the fourth quarter to mark five consecutive quarters of growth under the company's Back to Starbucks turnaround plan. Management credited customer service refinements and menu releases for building transaction momentum across all dayparts, which are blocks of time into which a 24-hour day is divided, categorized by the typical behavior, demographics, or activity of a customer.
We closed fiscal 2026 with another terrific quarter and a much stronger Starbucks than we had a year ago. Back to Starbucks started as a turnaround plan and now Back to Starbucks is our growth plan.
-- Brian Niccol, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
2. Cost Savings and Operational Precision Expand Margins
Consolidated operating margin expanded to approximately 14% in the fourth quarter. The company achieved this expansion by streamlining store operations and renegotiating supply contracts, which allows a larger portion of sales growth to reach the bottom line.
As we shared in the prepared remarks, we're over 50% of the $2 billion gross savings program achieved.
-- Cathy Smith, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
3. Cafe Uplifts Drive Traffic Across North America
Starbucks renovated cafes to bring back comfortable seating and restore its physical store environment. More than 80% of North American company-operated stores delivered positive same-store sales during the quarter following these layout updates.
As of fiscal year-end, we surpassed our goal by completing more than 1,700 total uplifts across North America, bringing back warm, comfortable seating and the third place to our cafes. Uplifted coffeehouses continue to show transaction lift across access points, dayparts, formats and loyalty groups, giving us confidence to continue our pace of work.
-- Brian Niccol, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
Looking Ahead
Traffic gains across all income tiers are expanding sales, and management is pointing to improved execution. The coffee chain relies on its proprietary rewards program, an expanded international footprint, and supply chain efficiencies to maintain momentum. Investors are watching pricing discipline and labor deployment as management manages input costs.
The business is on really strong footing and it's driven by operational health.
-- Brian Niccol, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
Capital allocation will prioritize store renovations, dividend increases, and targeted share repurchases to compound long-term returns.
Back to Starbucks has moved us from turnaround to growth and our priorities are clear. We're focused on executing with discipline, and delivering sustainable growth and long-term shareholder value.
-- Cathy Smith, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
