TQQQ Gained 59.18% While QQQ Gained 24.99%. Here Is Why That Is Not Triple.

Quick Read

  • TQQQ returned 59% over one year against QQQ's 25%, falling short of triple due to daily resets, hidden financing costs, and fees.

  • Daily rebalancing locks in losses at a lower base during choppy markets, dragging multi-period returns well below 3x the index move.

  • TQQQ's 0.82% expense ratio and embedded swap financing costs make it a short-term trading tool, not a multi-decade holding.

Over the one-year window ending September 4, 2026, ProShares UltraPro QQQ( NASDAQ:TQQQ ) returned 59.18%. Over the same window, Invesco QQQ Trust( NASDAQ:QQQ ) returned 24.99%. If TQQQ delivers triple exposure to the Nasdaq-100, a reader would expect roughly triple that second figure. The actual result falls short, and the gap is worth explaining.

Three bright green wooden blocks, each with a single black letter, spell out 'E', 'T', 'F' from left to right. They rest on a white surface. Below them, a blurred section of a financial chart with red and green vertical bars is visible. In the upper left background, the colorful spiral binding of a notebook is out of focus, and to the right, a portion of a black magnifying glass handle is also blurred.

The target is precise. TQQQ seeks three times the daily return of the Nasdaq-100. The emphasis on daily is important. Multi-period math becomes the holder's problem, and the gap between expectation and outcome includes three separate real costs.

Daily Reset and Why Path Beats Direction

Every trading day, TQQQ rebalances its swap book so the next day's exposure is three times the index. The fund compounds off a fresh base each morning. In a choppy market where the index rises, falls, and rises again, the fund locks in losses at the lower base before riding the rebound. This results in a round trip below 3x the period move. Over the window in question, TQQQ's worst peak-to-trough drop was -19.08% between July 21 and July 29, 2026, versus -6.66% for QQQ over the identical days. Daily standard deviation ran 0.0366 for TQQQ against 0.0123 for QQQ.

What's Your Number...?

Here's a question most people 5y from retirement can't answer: at your current savings rate, how much do you need, and how long will it actually last? Leverage cuts both ways. In a smooth, uninterrupted uptrend, daily compounding can actually exceed three times the period return. Daily compounding can be both a positive and a negative in terms of total returns. Ultimately, path drives the outcome.

Financing: The Collateral Stack Nobody Talks About

Borrowed exposure carries a price. TQQQ obtains its 3x position through total-return swaps, and the counterparties charge a financing rate on the notional value. The visible evidence sits inside the fund. As of May 31, 2026, the portfolio held a ProShares GENIUS Money Market ETF position worth roughly $7.3 billion, or 18.35% of net assets, alongside multiple U.S. Treasury bill lines and four disclosed repurchase agreement positions. That stack is collateral against the swap book. The interest it earns partially offsets the financing rate the fund is paying its swap counterparties, and the net difference is a persistent drag that never appears as a line item on the fact sheet. Total net assets on that date were $39.77 billion. As of September 9, the fund maintains a current AUM of $35.93 billion.

Expense Ratio: The Smallest and Loudest Cost

The expense ratio is the only one of the three costs the fund is required to print. The fund's current expense ratio sits at 0.82%. Notably higher than that of QQQ at 0.18%.

Along with QQQ, the Invesco NASDAQ 100 ETF( NASDAQ:QQQM ) tracks the same underlying index, and it is the obvious mirror for a holder who wants long-term Nasdaq-100 exposure without paying for a swap desk.

What This Means for You

TQQQ should be viewed as a trading tool. Over the past year, it has behaved exactly as its prospectus said it would: three times the daily move, resetting every morning, with the financing and fee costs of that leverage baked in.

That said, over long holding periods, performance can differ significantly. If leveraged exposure has a place in your account, it belongs in the small speculative sleeve with real sizing and exit rules (we wrote a free playbook on that here: Small Stakes, Big Swings). For holders with multi-decade horizons, the structural mismatch between a one-day objective and a long-dated account is the key consideration to weigh.
