Quick Read

  • TTD stock has crashed 67% to a 13x P/E, but customer retention above 95% and growing top accounts support the bounce case.

  • AppLovin (APP) fell 60% YTD while Magnite (MGNI) surged 44%, signaling TTD's collapse reflects company-specific execution failures, not purely industry pressure.

  • Analysts' 2027 EPS consensus of $1.00 sits below the already-cut 2026 estimate, and CFO Nate Olmstead warned visibility is more limited than recent history.

The Trade Desk( NASDAQ:TTD ) has become one of this year's hardest-hit advertising technology names, and the key question is whether the selloff has run its course. Trade Desk stock has fallen 67% year to date (YTD), recently trading around $12.43 and leaving the company with a market value of $5.34 billion.

Advertisers and agencies use The Trade Desk's self-service platform to buy digital ads across connected TV, mobile, display, audio and digital out-of-home channels. The big question, then, is whether investors should buy or sell TTD stock now.

A Second-Quarter Miss Reset Expectations

The slide in Trade Desk stock deepened in early August, when The Trade Desk reported Q2 2026 revenue of $715.06 million, below analyst expectations and up only 3% year over year. Its Q3 2026 revenue outlook of at least $650 million came in well below expectations.

Management at The Trade Desk pointed to pressure on consumer packaged goods and automotive advertisers, execution problems and a shift toward lower-cost fixed-price media. The company spoke on the earnings call. It stated that consumer packaged goods and autos together represent "around 25% of our business." CEO Jeff Green also admitted, "We didn't execute as well as we could have."

Ad-Tech Rivals Split as Large-Cap Tech Rallies

Ad-tech rivals of The Trade Desk have taken different paths this year, which helps separate company-specific trouble from industry problems. Notably, AppLovin( NASDAQ:APP ) stock is down 60% YTD to $266.49, a slide close to the one in Trade Desk shares. Magnite( NASDAQ:MGNI ) stock is up 44% YTD to $23.35, moving in the opposite direction from both.

The Invesco QQQ Trust( NASDAQ:QQQ ) is up 16% YTD, a gain that leaves Trade Desk shares far behind large-cap tech. Meanwhile, the Fidelity MSCI Communication Services Index ETF( NYSEARCA:FCOM ) is down 2% YTD, a much softer drop than the slide in Trade Desk stock. That fund, led by the largest digital ad sellers, serves as a gauge of advertising demand.

Bounce Case Versus Dead-Money Case

A bounce case for Trade Desk stock rests on the shares having already absorbed a sharply lower outlook. Trade Desk shares sit at a trailing 12-month P/E ratio of 14.87x, and The Trade Desk has kept customer retention above 95%. Green asserted on the call, "The majority of our top 100 accounts are growing double digits year over year."

The Trade Desk is also leaning on new products. It aims to win back budgets with a measurement framework in alpha testing and Audience Unlimited, a tool that simplifies buying third-party data. Management used $78 million on buybacks in Q2, leaving $269 million on its authorization.

Skeptics see dead money because analysts expect fixing The Trade Desk's pricing and execution problems to take several quarters. Chief financial officer Nate Olmstead addressed the call. He stated that visibility was "somewhat more limited than it has been in recent history." Analysts' 2027 earnings consensus of $1.0019 per share sits even lower than the 2026 estimate, so current forecasts show no rebound next year.

A Pricing Fix Holds the Key for Trade Desk

The next test for The Trade Desk is whether its rebuilt leadership team can steady revenue growth. New appointments include a CFO, CMO, Chief Commercial Officer and Chief Business Development Officer, plus incoming directors Penry Price and David Haddad. Traders can watch for whether The Trade Desk's next quarterly report shows revenue growth stabilizing.

Trade Desk shares offer recovery potential at a low multiple, yet the turnaround timeline remains uncertain. That mix argues for investors keeping their TTD stock allocations moderate until The Trade Desk shows that its fixes are working.
