Middle Coast Investing, an investment advisory firm, released its second-quarter 2026 investor letter. The letter can be downloaded here . Market breadth in Q3 2026 reviews shows dominance by a few sectors, with S&P 500 stocks averaging a 9.7% return and only 40.55% above their 200-day moving average. Key themes include AI, inflation, and the U.S.-Iran conflict, which, though temporary, affects energy security. Inflation is pressuring consumers, while market resilience is linked to AI spending amid higher rates. During the quarter, U.S., Core U.S., and European portfolios returned -2.4%, -3.9%, and -5.0%, respectively. Despite market headwinds, underlying U.S. portfolio holdings generated solid fundamentals with median revenue growth of 7.2% and earnings growth of 16.4%, supporting a cautious strategy focused on resilient, well-capitalized businesses. Middle Coast Investing stated the following regarding TriMas Corporation (NASDAQ:TRS) in its Q3 2026 investor letter:
"We've owned TriMas Corporation(NASDAQ:TRS) for over a year, but added significantly to it this quarter. Trimas is a metal and plastic packaging company with a small gas cylinders unit. It trades for, as I write, a roughly $1.4B market cap, but thanks to its recent sale of its aerospace unit, an enterprise value of only $550M, or $725M if we adjust for taxes still due.
The balance sheet is in a great place. The debt is locked in at a 4.125% interest rate through 2029. Trimas's cash should earn a higher interest rate. The math is a little confusing as we sort through what Trimas's corporate costs are after its aerospace sale, but I get the company trading at 9.2x 2026 EV/EBITDA at current prices.
