Chief executive Carol Tomé of UPS struck a confident tone on the earnings call, stating, "US consumers remain resilient and the outlook for holiday demand is strong." That optimism follows a calculated effort to cut lower-margin shipments from the company's largest customer in favor of more profitable deliveries and cost savings. For the fourth quarter of 2026, the company guided to revenue of about $25.7 billion and adjusted operating profit of about $3.3 billion.

Inside UPS, the U.S. Domestic segment showed the payoff from the shift toward premium volume, with operating margin climbing 60 basis points to 7%. Small and midsize business customers made up a record 35.1% of U.S. volume, while the International segment returned to year-over-year operating profit growth for the first time in several quarters. Network consolidation and automation under the company's Efficiency Reimagined program are expected to deliver nearly $3 billion in benefits this year.

FedEx stock is trading ahead of the company's own quarterly report, which is expected after the close later this week. Until those numbers arrive, UPS holds the newest read on holiday parcel demand among the three companies.

UPS Carries a Raised Outlook Into the Holiday Peak

Optimists can point to UPS entering the holiday peak with a raised outlook and the most automated and efficient network in its history. Skeptics have a weak spot to cite in the supply chain business, where profit fell from a year earlier even as that unit's revenue grew. A goodwill impairment tied to the segment also weighed on reported results.

The next test for UPS is whether holiday volume meets its raised outlook. Investors can watch to see if profitability in the supply chain unit steadies as the company moves through its busiest weeks. FedEx's scheduled report later this week may offer a second view of parcel pricing and demand.

UPS's international volume declined in the quarter largely because of trade and geopolitical tensions. However, trends improved each month.

One strong quarter still leaves UPS with peak-season execution ahead, along with the shift away from lower-margin volume from its largest customer that management expects to weigh on shipment comparisons for several more quarters. UPS stock traders may prefer to keep their share exposure small until the holiday peak ends.
