Vistry Shares Sink 11.5% After Buyback Halt And Profit Warning

This article first appeared on GuruFocus .

Vistry Group ( BVHMY ) shares came under sharp pressure after the UK housebuilder paused the remainder of its share buyback program and warned that its push to raise cash and cut debt could weigh more heavily on profit than previously expected. The company said first-half profit is now expected to be significantly lower than the prior year, with management using measures including more incentives and discounted home sales as it tries to strengthen the balance sheet.

Shares fell as much as 11.5% in early London trading, marking their biggest intraday drop since March 4 and extending their decline this year to 55%. The pressure comes as Vistry delays or slows construction at some sites, while new Chief Executive Officer Adam Daniels leads an operational review and is expected to update shareholders by the time of interim results in September.

The update adds another layer of caution around the UK new-build housing market, where macro-economic uncertainty, higher energy prices, cost inflation, and mortgage-rate pressure could continue to limit buyer affordability. Still, Vistry said its effort to offload homes for private sale as it pivots toward building affordable homes to order has lifted its sales rate, and the company now expects full-year profit to land in the mid-range of analyst expectations, though execution risks remain high.
