Shares of Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) rose 8.9% on Thursday, October 29, 2026, while the S&P 500 fell 0.3%. The gain came a day after Chipotle reported its third-quarter results on October 28. Revenue came in above estimates, while adjusted earnings per share fell below them. Four of the chain's five peers also posted smaller gains during that session. What in Chipotle's results did news reports link to the rise?

Chipotle Topped Sales Estimates As Transactions Rose

Chipotle's third-quarter revenue reached $3,293 million, a little above the $3,287 million analysts expected. Adjusted earnings per share came in at $0.27, below the $0.29 estimate. The company released its results after the market closed on Wednesday. News reports linked Thursday's rise to same-store sales that topped estimates, as well as to the chain's push to bring customer traffic back .

During the October 28 call, management said same-store sales increased 2.1% in the quarter and transactions rose 0.8%. It added that Pollo Asado's return on August 31 brought in extra transactions, while Chili Lime Chips, launched the same day, got more guests to add chips.

Fresh products give buyers a reason to return; an unchanged lineup can stall. Consider Tesla, which got 98% of last quarter's deliveries from the Model 3 and Model Y and saw deliveries fall two years in a row. Read Trefis Big Story: How Tesla Blundered .

The industry saw a pullback in the first part of October, management said, but Chipotle's transactions have since turned positive again. Management expects fourth-quarter same-store sales to rise around 2% overall, with the growth rate reaching 3% to 4% by the end of the quarter as smoked brisket returns to the menu in November.

Margins slipped in the quarter. Management put the company's restaurant-level margin, its own adjusted measure, at 23.3%. That figure is down 120 basis points from a year earlier.

Did Chipotle Rise With Its Restaurant Peers?

Most of Chipotle's peers also rose, though by much less. Four of the five companies on the Trefis peer list gained during the session, leaving Restaurant Brands International as the only decline. Texas Roadhouse posted the largest advance among them at 4.7%. The consumer discretionary sector fund, XLY, rose 0.8% on a day the S&P 500 fell. Chipotle rose almost twice as much as Texas Roadhouse, so a large part of its gain was its own rather than the group's.

Where Does Chipotle Stock Stand After The Jump?

A rise this large is rare for Chipotle. One session in the prior 365 days saw a rise at least as big. After the jump, the stock was still down 22.3% over the twelve months to October 29, compared with a 13.3% gain for the S&P 500.

Much of that fall occurred in the last three months. The shares lost 16.0% from July 31 to October 29, while the S&P 500 rose 3.3%. Chipotle closed the session at $31.28. That price sits above the stock's 52-week closing low of $27.52 set on October 23, 2026, and remains well below the closing high of $40.87 reached on January 23, 2026.

Chipotle is expected to report its fourth-quarter 2026 results in February 2027. Same-store sales growth is the figure to watch in that report.
