With Alphabet GOOGL) and Amazon AMZN) reporting negative free cash flow amid massive AI infrastructure spending, free cash flow (FCF) is becoming one of the most important metrics for evaluating technology stocks heading into 2027.
Five companies that stand out for their strong cash generation are Nvidia NVDA), Broadcom AVGO), Microsoft MSFT), Apple AAPL), and Adobe ADBE ).
The distinction is compelling:While hyperscalers spend aggressively to build AI infrastructure, semiconductor suppliers and capital-efficient technology companies are generating substantial cash to support future growth, dividends, and share repurchases.
Notably, Alphabet reported negative FCF of $9.1 billion in Q3, although its trailing 12-month FCF remained positive at $19.7 billion. Amazon's trailing 12-month FCF fell to negative $42.4 billion, reflecting its massive AI investments.
Importantly, negative FCF doesn't necessarily signal financial distress, but it highlights the importance of evaluating capital expenditures and cash-generating efficiency.
Nvidia & Broadcom: AI Leaders Generating Enormous Cash
Nvidia has emerged as one of the biggest cash generators, producing $21.34 billion in free cash flow during its latest reported quarter, up nearly 59% year over year. This brought FCF for the first-half of its current fiscal 2027 to an impressive $69.9 billion, underscoring Nvidia's exceptional profitability and capital-efficient semiconductor design business.
Nvidia's accelerating cash generation is particularly impressive, with annual free cash flow surging from $27 billion in FY24 to nearly $100 billion in FY26. Furthermore, FCF has climbed to approximately $127 billion on a trailing 12-month (TTM) basis, highlighting Nvidia's extraordinary ability to capitalize on booming AI infrastructure demand.

Broadcom is another standout, generating a record $13.7 billion in FCF during its latest quarter, up 95% YoY and representing an impressive 46% of revenue. Broadcom converted approximately 96% of operating cash flow into FCF, benefiting from strong demand for custom AI chips, networking equipment, and high-margin infrastructure software.
Broadcom's annual FCF surged from $19.4 billion in FY24 to $27 billion last year, with TTM FCF approaching $40 billion. This impressive growth further illustrates Broadcom's ability to convert soaring AI infrastructure demand into substantial cash generation.
In other words, both companies are direct beneficiaries of the massive AI infrastructure investments pressuring cash flow at hyperscalers.

Apple's Exceptional Capital Efficiency
Apple stands out for its remarkably capital-efficient business model, supported by its global iPhone ecosystem, growing Services business, and outsourced manufacturing strategy.
Apple generated approximately $136.7 billion in FCF over the trailing 12 months ended June 2026, while capital expenditures totaled just over $10 billion. This translates to an impressive FCF margin near 29%, with 93% of operating cash flow converted into FCF.
With Apple set to report its fiscal Q4 results after the market closes on Monday, investors will be watching whether strong iPhone demand and Services growth can sustain its impressive cash generation heading into FY27.
Apple also boasts an exceptionally high return on invested capital (ROIC) of around 55%, highlighting its ability to generate substantial profits relative to the capital invested in its business.

Microsoft & Adobe: Strong Cash Flow From Software and Cloud
Microsoft generated approximately $18.6 billion in FCF during its latest quarter, despite aggressive spending on AI infrastructure. Its recurring Microsoft 365 subscriptions and rapidly expanding Azure cloud business provide substantial cash generation, with management expecting to remain FCF-positive throughout its current FY27 despite rising capital expenditures.
Meanwhile, like Apple, Adobe offers another attractive capital-light business model, supported by recurring Creative Cloud and Acrobat subscriptions. Adobe generated $2.44 billion in FCF during its latest quarter, up nearly 15% YoY and representing an impressive 36% of revenue. With 97% of operating cash flow converted into FCF, Adobe's capital efficiency makes it an appealing alternative to more capital-intensive AI investments.
Bottom Line: Cash Flow Matters More Than Ever
With AI infrastructure spending accelerating, investors should increasingly focus on free cash flow margins, cash conversion, return on invested capital, and valuation rather than revenue growth alone.
Nvidia and Broadcom offer exceptional cash generation tied directly to AI demand, while Apple's capital efficiency makes it particularly compelling. Microsoft and Adobe also provide substantial cash-generating capabilities through their recurring software and cloud businesses.
Together, these five technology leaders offer investors exposure to AI and digital innovation without necessarily sacrificing strong underlying cash flow.
