Why Kinsale Capital Group (KNSL) stock is trading lower today

What happened?

Shares of specialty insurance provider Kinsale Capital Group (NYSE:KNSL) fell 7.9% in the afternoon session after the company reported third-quarter revenue that dropped 8.6% year over year to $454.8 million, and a book value per share that trailed consensus estimates.

Total revenue missed the consensus estimate, while the book value per share of $85.25 fell short of the projected $95.13. Although core net earned premiums rose 3.0% to $423.5 million and net investment income increased 17.5% to $58.3 million, top-line revenue was weighed down by a $37.8 million fair-value contraction on equity holdings alongside a $37.6 million pre-tax realized loss from a strategic repositioning of the fixed-maturity investment portfolio, the company stated in its earnings release. Gross written premiums also fell 4.8% to $462.9 million, driven largely by a 19.3% drop in property divisions amid heightened competition.

In a separate announcement, the company stated that Bryan P. Petrucelli, Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer, and Treasurer, was elected to the board of directors and will retire from his executive role on March 2, 2027. Christopher R. Tangard will succeed him as Chief Financial Officer.

What is the market telling us

Kinsale Capital Group's shares are not very volatile and have only had 9 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today's move indicates the market considers this news meaningful, although it might not be something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was 12 months ago when the stock dropped 8.1% on the news that its third-quarter results, while strong, failed to meet the market's lofty expectations. The company reported impressive results for the third quarter, with revenue of $497.5 million and adjusted earnings per share of $5.21, beating analysts' expectations by 10.9% and 8%, respectively. Revenue grew 19% year-over-year, driven by a 17.8% increase in net premiums earned. However, despite the strong top- and bottom-line performance, the company's book value per share of $80.19 came in slightly below consensus estimates.

For a highly-valued stock like Kinsale, even minor blemishes can trigger a sell-off, and it appears investors were expecting a flawless report.

Kinsale Capital Group is down 7.4% since the beginning of the year, and at $363.47 per share, it is trading 19.8% below its 52-week high of $453.15 from October 2025. Despite the year-to-date decline, investors who bought $1,000 worth of Kinsale Capital Group's shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $2,190.
