Why MTN Group Rose Even Though Profit Fell

Trade MTN on Coinbase

If you had bought MTN Group on 23 October 2025, you probably did it with two competing stories in mind: data-fuelled fintech growth on one side, and Starlink, regulation, and heavy capex on the other. For MTN Group shareholders, the return over the past year was 20.7%, including dividends. With revenue higher yet net margin lower by the August 2026 half-year, which of those early concerns should have carried more weight in that decision?

The Two MTN Group Stories Investors Had To Weigh

The shares cost ZAR167 at the start of the period, so anyone looking at MTN Group was really choosing between two sharply different stories.

The bullish view argued that mobile internet and fintech would reshape the group, with a Fair Value of ZAR220, meaning the price those upbeat assumptions implied, backed by expectations of 18.3% annual revenue growth.

The bearish side pointed to Starlink, regulation, and capital intensity, with a Fair Value of ZAR73 and a key concern that ongoing heavy network spend would keep free cash flow under strain.

What The Results Changed For The MTN Group Debate

The clearest new fact for MTN Group investors was the H1 2026 result. Revenue reached ZAR118,895m versus ZAR109,268m a year earlier, which leaned toward the optimistic data and fintech story. Net income moved the other way at ZAR7,410m versus ZAR9,887m, and net margin slipped from 9.0% to 6.2%, which supported the cautious case on profitability. Overall, the evidence cut both ways.

The lesson to carry to the next stock is simple. When a growth pitch relies on higher margins as much as higher turnover, check whether net income and net margin move in the same direction as revenue once the next set of results is released.

What MTN Group's Current Price Already Assumes

MTN Group now trades at ZAR196, after a 20.7% gain over the past year. The selected Narrative's Fair Value sits below that level, reflecting a view that the current quote already bakes in demanding assumptions.

The core argument turns on whether strong data and fintech usage can outweigh energy costs, legal and regulatory friction, and a capital hungry infrastructure plan. Anyone buying today is effectively assuming those usage trends translate into durable equity free cash flow. The key question is how that stacks up against the energy and execution risks the Narrative spells out.

"The main thing that has to go right is that MTN Group converts strong data and fintech usage trends, supported by disciplined CapEx and low leverage, into sustained equity free cash flow while managing regulatory and macro shocks across its markets. The numbers imply that MTN Group's share price already prices in ambitious growth and capital return targets despite the company facing elevated energy costs, ongoing FX impairments and a fintech business that is temporarily tracking below its guided growth range."
