What Happened?
Shares of cloud reporting platform Workiva (NYSE:WK) jumped 3.3% in the morning session after S&P Dow Jones Indices announced that the company will join the S&P SmallCap 600.
According to a press release from S&P Dow Jones Indices, Workiva is scheduled to replace Formfactor Inc. in the S&P SmallCap 600 prior to the opening of trading on Tuesday, October 6. The change comes as part of a series of component shifts across multiple benchmarks. Index additions frequently generate positive market sentiment because investment funds that track the benchmark must adjust their portfolios to include the newly designated member.
After the initial pop, the shares cooled down to $71.74, up 3% from the previous close.

What Is The Market Telling Us
Workiva's shares are very volatile and have had 23 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today's move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.
The previous big move we wrote about was about 20 hours ago when the stock gained 5.5% on the news that strength across artificial intelligence and technology equities helped lift major market averages, offsetting macroeconomic headwinds from Treasury yields near 24-year highs.
Equities showed resilience as strong investor appetite for artificial intelligence hardware and software providers pushed the sector higher for a second straight session. The momentum in tech shares helped counterbalance significant pressure stemming from benchmark Treasury yields trading around multi-decade highs alongside rising crude oil prices. Typically, higher yields elevate financing costs and weigh on the valuations of growth-oriented companies. However, market participants remained focused on underlying enterprise AI adoption, evaluating incoming corporate earnings reports, and awaiting key macroeconomic data, including the upcoming jobs report.
Workiva is down 13.5% since the beginning of the year, and at $71.74 per share, it is trading 23.1% below its 52-week high of $93.31 from November 2025. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Workiva's shares 5 years ago would now be looking at only $524.19.
