Another major gaming platform is shutting down

As the excitement surrounding the upcoming web3 gaming industry dissipates, another game is preparing to take its final bow.

Xterio has confirmed that its first-party, 4X mobile strategy game, Age of Dino, will completely shut down on September 30, 2025, and will take a final snapshot of its assets on September 29.

The developers of Age of Dino explained that the project will "evolve beyond our current form,"without any specifics provided. However, observers suggest the project's folding could be related to the anticipated launch of Reach Social (working title), a brand new platform that is being developed by some of the same developers.

The complete shutdown of Age of Dino adds to the growing reality that while web3 gaming was widely considered to be the revolution, the vast majority of blockchain-based games today are closing shop.

The shakeout

Xterio is pulling the plug again, which proves what's become of MOOMOO in the long term, as we have discussed before. This leads Xterio to predict that they'll all pull the plug multiple times.

For players, the pivot underscores the fragility of early web3 ecosystems where high costs, long development cycles, and uncertain monetization models frequently clash.

More news:

Age of Dino may be winding down for Xterio, but where the company goes next could determine whether it becomes a player in the next round of blockchain-enabled gaming — or simply another artifact from one era's boom and bust.

A bigger trend of closing shops

The shutdown sheds light on an emerging truth. While web3 gaming was advertised as the next step in the gaming industry, many within the industry are struggling for profits.

According to the reports , development costs are high — keeping a 10-person team together eats up close to $1 1million per cycle. Most of these Web3 gaming projects that raised money during the boom of 2021-2022 are starting to run out of funding by the mid-2025 timeline.

Many games today are more complex than Age of Dino, and their teams can easily grow to more than 50 personnel, resulting in nearly unimaginable costs for the developing studio.
