Investing in JCY International Berhad (KLSE:JCY) three years ago would have delivered you a 182% gain

The worst result, after buying shares in a company (assuming no leverage), would be if you lose all the money you put in. But in contrast you can make much more than 100% if the company does well. For instance the JCY International Berhad( KLSE:JCY ) share price is 182% higher than it was three years ago. That sort of return is as solid as granite. It's also good to see the share price up 32% over the last quarter.

Now it's worth having a look at the company's fundamentals too, because that will help us determine if the long term shareholder return has matched the performance of the underlying business.

Trump has pledged to "unleash" American oil and gas and these 15 US stocks have developments that are poised to benefit.

Given that JCY International Berhad didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one would hope for good top-line growth to make up for the lack of earnings.

JCY International Berhad actually saw its revenue drop by 13% per year over three years. So we wouldn't have expected the share price to gain 41% per year, but it has. It's a good reminder that expectations about the future, not the past history, always impact share prices.

It's probably worth noting that the CEO is paid less than the median at similar sized companies. It's always worth keeping an eye on CEO pay, but a more important question is whether the company will grow earnings throughout the years. A Different Perspective

JCY International Berhad provided a TSR of 1.3% over the last twelve months. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. On the bright side, that's still a gain, and it is certainly better than the yearly loss of about 8% endured over half a decade. So this might be a sign the business has turned its fortunes around. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
