Kohl's Corporation announced on Thursday significant real estate changes in 2025, including the closure of its long-standing San Bernardino, Calif., e-commerce fulfillment center (EFC) and 27 retail locations.

Operating since 2010, the San Bernardino facility will shut down in May when the lease on that facility expires. According to the company, Kohl's has expanded its capacity to fulfill customer orders from store locations and will no longer need the e-commerce fulfillment center .

The downsizing also includes the closure of 27 stores by April, including 10 locations in California and more stores in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Texas and other states. According to the company, all employees affected by this decision have been informed and offered either a competitive severance package or the ability to apply to other open roles at Kohl's.

"We always take these decisions very seriously," said Tom Kingsbury, Kohl's chief executive officer, via statement. "As we continue to build on our long-term growth strategy, it is important that we also take difficult but necessary actions to support the health and future of our business for our customers and our teams."

On Thursday, WWD reported that Macy's is closing 66 stores in 2025, including the Macy's department store in downtown Brooklyn.

"Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy's stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go–forward stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service," said Tony Spring, chairman and chief executive officer of Macy's Inc., in a statement.
