Facing "an unprecedented tariff landscape," Orvis, the outdoor and sporting goods chain, will permanently close 36 stores and five outlets in early 2026, company President Simon Perkins told MassLive.
"We're stepping into an exciting new chapter — one focused on our core passions of fly fishing and wingshooting," Perkins said in the statement. "This return to our roots is a renewed dedication to innovation, a commitment to our angling and upland communities, and to the wild places we love."
The change means that Orvis is tightening its product assortment. While the company confirmed with MassLive that it is not fully exiting lifestyle apparel, it will prioritize gear and products that connect directly to its core outdoor pursuits.
Orvis also plans to focus more on its brick-and-mortar portfolio and expand opportunities through its existing network of more than 550 domestic independent dealers and several national outdoor retailers.
Orvis was founded in 1856 by Charles F. Orvis in Manchester, Vermont, as a fly-fishing equipment store, according to its website . The company later expanded into sportswear, home furnishings, luggage, travel accessories and pet products. The company's headquarters remains in Sunderland, Vermont.
