Man who put $50K into Bitcoin 12 years ago shocks internet

Trade BTC on Coinbase

A resurfaced Reddit post from 12 years ago has reignited debate in the Bitcoin community after a user revealed in 2013 that they put their entire life savings of $50,000 into Bitcoin.

The post, archived on r/Bitcoin, shows the user reasoning that at age 30, it was the right time to take a risk.

"I'm only 30, so I know while it is a risk, I still have a chance to recover if it crashes, and I have a full-time job anyway. I just thought about how the people around me are putting money into their houses, into children, and expensive weddings, and they will never get a return on that. It just disappears."

The user explained their rationale for taking a risk at 30, calling Bitcoin a "great opportunity"since it has a limited supply.

Community reactions

The bold move has today's community speculating on how it now thinks the community could have turned out.

One user wrote , "Good luck. I've put about 50% of my savings in BTC (being conservative because there are other forms of honest money). We're in the same boat."

One of the top comments made a rough guess that the stash could be worth tens of millions of dollars now, depending on the entry price, while another made a note that it would be over $40 million now if it were held till today, and the record high prices.

Another suggestion was that the original poster never even held it for that long, as others speculated that they may have sold it during one of the big market corrections.

Commenters voiced doubts about the ability to track such a wallet on the blockchain, noting that they can see the transactions, but the transaction cannot necessarily be tied to the user.

Another user said :

"I'm doing the same thing with 150k. Go balls deep bro don't listen to these careful guppies. Let them diversify and keep the Pennie's. You don't know either way so even the dream is going to energize you. Work hard and keep saving for a rainy Day and k ow you and be both we locked in long term. All or nothing I'm declaring war on fiat and gov spending. Enjoy the high that comes from having balls."

Others warned against disappearing wallets, hinting at recent hacks.

"Please do your future self a favor and self custody with that much amount."

How much would the Bitcoin be worth today

As Bitcoin's price surpassed $123,000, many wondered whether the reddit user was patient and held onto the bag because the fortune would likely reach hundreds of millions — if the user really stuck to their plan. The biggest question that has emerged is: just how much would that $50,000 investment be worth now?

Had the Redditor indeed followed through with their plan, the $50,000 investment in 2013 would have procured approximately 200 BTC, based on the average Bitcoin price of $250 back then.

Today, with Bitcoin's price at approximately $122,873, their 200 BTC stash would be worth over $24.5 million — a mind-boggling figure that explains why the original post has continued to gain traction.
