The past five years for ITM Power (LON:ITM) investors has not been profitable

We're definitely into long term investing, but some companies are simply bad investments over any time frame. We don't wish catastrophic capital loss on anyone. For example, we sympathize with anyone who was caught holding ITM Power Plc( LON:ITM ) during the five years that saw its share price drop a whopping 88%. Shareholders have had an even rougher run lately, with the share price down 26% in the last 90 days. While a drop like that is definitely a body blow, money isn't as important as health and happiness.

With that in mind, it's worth seeing if the company's underlying fundamentals have been the driver of long term performance, or if there are some discrepancies.

Because ITM Power made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually desire strong revenue growth. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.

Over five years, ITM Power grew its revenue at 40% per year. That's well above most other pre-profit companies. So it's not at all clear to us why the share price sunk 13% throughout that time. It could be that the stock was over-hyped before. We'd recommend carefully checking for indications of future growth - and balance sheet threats - before considering a purchase.

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that ITM Power shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 69% over one year. There's no doubt those recent returns are much better than the TSR loss of 13% per year over five years. The long term loss makes us cautious, but the short term TSR gain certainly hints at a brighter future. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand ITM Power better, we need to consider many other factors. To that end, you should be aware of the 2 warning signs we've spotted with ITM Power .
