Last month, the Denver Broncos gave guard Quinn Meinerz a four-year, $80 million contract extension that made him the third-highest-paid guard in the NFL based on average salary ($20 million per year).
"We are excited for him with his consistency and how he played at a position we value," coach Sean Payton said on July 23. "It made sense for the player and the club ... We're excited we got that done."
Meinerz still had one year (2024) left on his rookie contract before signing his extension, and the team added a void year (2029) to his deal.
As part of the deal, Meinerz received a $11,710,154 signing bonus that will be prorated as $2.3 million salary cap hits over a four-year period, according to OverTheCap.com . Meinerz also has a $10,275,000 option bonus that will be prorated as $2.055 million cap hits from 2025-2029.
The lineman will receive $24 million in the first year, and the deal includes $45 million guaranteed , but his salary cap hits will be manageable. He would need to max out all the incentives in his deal to reach $80 million in total compensation.
Here's a look at Meinerz's cap numbers over the next six years, via OTC:
2024: $3,565,154
2025: $5,525,000
2026: $19,721,000
2027: $22,355,000
2028: $22,355,000
2029: $2,055,000 (void year)
Meinerz will be 31 when his void year takes effect in 2029, perhaps young enough to earn another notable extension. The Broncos will cross that bridge when they come to it. For now, Meinerz is locked up through the 2028 season.
